Always wondered about this, A Division question

Ok 4 team division, end of the season two team out of it.

Remaining two teams have following records.

Team A 10-6 but lost all its division games.

Team B 9-7 but won all its division games.

Too me Team A wins the Division because it has best overall record.

Is this correct?

If so what is the real value of division games, only as tie breakers?

Team A wins.. see possible Cleveland-Pitt situation. They are both 9-5, but Pitt has won 5 games in the division while the Browns have won 3. If Pitt loses out and Cleveland wins out the Browns get the North.

Of course division games also have an impact on a team's overall record because there are more of them. In the scenario you describe Team A would have had to go 10-0 in its non division games and Team B would have had to go 3-7, not very likely scenarios.

This is correct. Now, you're talking about 6 games out of 16. This means team A was 10-0 vs the rest of the league, whereas team B was only 3-7. Don't those games count for something?

Now consider this: the Steelers and Browns are tied for first at 9-5 in their division, but the Steelers get first place because they won both meetings vs the Browns. However, the Steelers are only 7-5 vs the rest of the league whereas the Browns are 9-3. Hmmm?... OK, the Steelers are logically the division leader, but I just add some food for thought.
