You cannot possibly be blaming Roger Goodell for Tua returning to action. Once Tua passes concussion protocol, which he did, Goodell has zero authority whatsoever to banish the guy from the League due to injuries.“My job is to protect the integrity of the NFL and to make sure the game is as safe as possible.”
— Roger Goodell
That and the coke didn't help his heart out much either.Based on some of the comments I have seen from Tua, he may be in denial of the risks of playing on with all these concussions. He claims there is a "gray area" when it isn't really certain that a lot of concussions cause long term health issues or not and he isn't convinced that getting another concussion or two or six will increase those odds.
For some reason, Tua is reminding me of Reggie Lewis. For those who don't remember, most medical experts said Lewis should retire after he passed out in a game and was found to have a heart defect. These experts included the "dream team" of doctors examining him. Lewis wanted to play and found Dr. Gilbert Mudge who gave him the diagnosis he was looking for that he could return to playing. Lewis died a couple of months later of a massive heart attack.
I wonder if Tua sought out medical advice that he wanted to hear and not medical advice that would tell him the truth.
I think he saw how much money is left due on his contract. If he was medically cleared and chose to retire he would forego $124M.Based on some of the comments I have seen from Tua, he may be in denial of the risks of playing on with all these concussions.
