Greg Bedard assessments: Texans game, Drake Maye performance

The grifting done on the Patriots has become unbearable since they started losing.

As if Maye is expected to solve all the problems in one game.

Imagine if he he had 0 TDs what these bozos would be saying.

But that isn't what's going on here, it's not "grifting" on the Pats losing. Bedard has had a two-hour Tuesday slot on 98.5 during the football season for many years giving objective, insightful takes on Patriot performances good and bad. This session was no exception to that.

Other than his all 22 breakdowns I didn't pay Bedard all that much attention when the Pats were winning

Bedard gave Maye a C-...really??

We were soooo spoiled. I remember thinking what’s this garbage in 2009 ! Hahaha. What was I thinking ?

He was good for pointing out every fault the Pats had while they were winning Super Bowls, not interested in what he has to say anymore.

His reasoning is hard to argue with. As he explained, the Maye assessments are based on plus/minus plays from the position regardless of being a rookie in his first start. He also suggests Maye probably should've been named the starter much earlier.

Depends on your scale.

If you are grading based on expectations for a debut performance, Maye did pretty well.

If you are grading Maye based on what you expect a winning QB to do in a game, then two picks and a fumble gets you a C- if you really sling the ball otherwise.

Fumble was not on him and the 2nd interception wasn't either, he got hit and the ball flew into a scrum of players. Hopefully in the future he learns to avoid those situations, but the Oline has to be better.

Sure the fumble was on him, he needs better awareness (which will come with experience). So were both interceptions, but some argument could be made against the second.

That's why I said he has to avoid those situations in the future, I'd have to watch it again, but I thought it was more on the Oline.

He and the felger and mazz show have been grifting on the Patriots for years. Long before the losing.

And the coverage has always been negative. I've lived just about every second of it.

Not sure what you mean by "grifting." It's a sports talk show so of course they're going to stir the pot with controversial takes, it's the nature of the beast. But as I've pointed out several times now, Bedard's analyses are objective. The problem in this for us is the Patriots have been more bad than good in recent years and the truth can be hard to hear.

But his play +/- is wrong

He can be excellent, but he can also be way off. I didn’t like the grade he gave Maye and I don’t think Maye was ready to start week 1; the time working with McCartney/McAdoo seems to have had a positive effect on his performance.

Frankly, I think Phil Perry had a better analysis of Maye’s first game.

Without benefit of an itemization and studying the all-22, that would be hard to say.

Again, the grade was strictly for production at the position, not Maye perhaps exceeding expectations of a rookie in his first start.

I didn't have any problem with what Bedard said. He did correctly identify AVP not helping the Offensive Tackles at all by leaving them 1 on 1 against experienced outstanding pass rushers. That has been a factor in every game.

Agreed on the fumble , protection wasnt good but the ball needs to get out. Or he has to tuck it in for the sack. On tape there were 2 guys open pretty early, not sure if they were just later in the progression or he just couldn’t decide on where to go, im ok with missing the open guy but protecting the ball is priority.

The second pick was a fluke imo, not gonna hold that against him. Most of the time those are batted down at worst. You often see passes batted down at the los but in my memory very rare it pops softly into a defenders arms.
