This is ESPN's play-by-play:

3rd & 5 at NE 22

(0:09 - 1st) (Shotgun) C. Stroud pass incomplete short right to T.Dell. PENALTY on HST-S.Diggs, Illegal Shift, 5 yards, enforced at NE 22.

Even though the Pats lost they still won.

Maye gained valuable experience and made some NFL plays out there. Pop is happy as a clam that he finally was able to showcase his stuff and score. And... the Pats did not hurt draft position.

A dark cloud was lofted off this franchise.

Sprinkling in a little first down play action would of helped him, they were crashing down to stop the run on every 1st down.

Defense should be a concern, it's getting worse by the week.
Nailed it! they are giving up close to 200yds on the ground weekly.

Ehhh, agree but nothing lofted yet. Defense getting worse, coaching is very suspect. Borderline fraudulent.

Jabbar Van Pelt is still around.

I just rewatched this play. The WR was clearly out of bounds and there was a ref one foot away who ruled him out of bounds.

But then the end zone judge ran up for clarification.

The head ref then called the illegal shift but did not say whether it was ruled a reception or not.

In such a crucial instant, the NFL video replay needed to step in and tell us if the receiver had landed in bounds.

But they didn't.

Instead, the Texans were rewarded with an extra play.

Pats weren’t going to win this game anyway, but that was the worst officiated Patriots game I’ve seen in a while. From that, to the phantom PI, to the non-reversal of the TD where Gonzo pushed him out at the 1, to the “false start” by Maye because of the defense going offsides. There was even one play where the Texans got hosed, I can’t remember which one. NFL needs to be much better than this.

I'm reading this thread, other than this post and maybe one other, I have to think that the posters here weren't at this game. Most of us at the game were disgusted at the one-sided calls against the Patriots.

This was the worst officiated game I've ever seen in person. The Texans were given every possible break that allowed them to break out to a 14 point lead. How can any team compete when this happens? Two totally bogus DPI calls. The one in the endzone was particularly bogus because not only was the contact minimal, the ball was un-catchable. On top of that, the Texans got away with so much more holding than the Patriots. And what was up with the missed facemask penalty?? They call that and maybe Maye doesn't have to drop back for that sack/fumble?

I was seriously wondering if the refs were on the take. It was that bad.

Mayo and Covington have been big disappointments. It's clear now that they can’t hold Bill’s jock as defensive coaches. The defensive metrics this year vs. last year are startling and not in a good way. I have zero confidence that they will be able to come up with an innovative game plan that surprises and confuses an elite QB/OC combo.

Patriots beat the Patriots today. Just no accountability.

You forgot the blatant face mask penalty on the play before the strip sack. Don’t tell me the fumble would have occurred anyway if it that hadn’t been missed. This was the worst most lopsided officiating since the Jerome Bogar screw job against the Chiefs in December 19th which I witnessed.

I watch most non Pats games as well. Officiating is horribly game to game and week to week across the game. The games are so inconsistently called and always seem to favor one team over the other. Funny how it’s always the hot heavily marketed teams that get the calls. The Pats wouldn’t have won today if the game had been evenly officiated. The Texans are a good, physical and nasty team on offense and defense and dominated the line of scrimmage, but the game would have been more competitive and the loss less infuriating.

This loss was mainly due to the coaching staff, they all look out of their league, Mayo has no clue. Did he not learnt a thing from Belicheck ? No in game decisions, he does not use any time outs, his game plans are horrible. How Kraft thought this was Bill's successor is beyond me ? If they don't realize this, Maye will get ruined , he needs someone like Josh, who can coach him properly, someone that is a very good OC, not a clown show like we have right now !
I actually do feel that maybe the defense was more SB than Mayo. They seem to have regressed. I know they are dealing with injuries, but today for the first time, I felt like some of them were freelancing .
The person or people that are in charge of our strength and conditioning need to be fired. I have never seen so many injuries hit the team all at once , it's ridiculous.
Overall, I am not a fan of Mayo or anything he has done his first off season and his first season as head coach. But I fear we are stuck with him as old Bobby will not fire him for at least 3 years ! Great Patriots player but horrible coach !!!
This season is so frustrating to watch, as we had millions to spend and got no one of value especially on the offensive side of the ball in free agency !
The question is: Will Kraft make a move this off season to replace most of the coaching staff. Because they flat out suck.
This is possible because Kraft will throw anyone under the bus to save his persona
Or will he take the cheap root and keep most knowing he would owe money on existing contracts. And then have to
go out and spend money on new contracts. Man does have a bologna sandwich mentality
They need to do something. Maye deserves a fair chance.

Based on the results so far, Steve B's play calling is also missed. There is still time for the current regime to figure it out.

It was funny, sad, yet encouraging to hear the loud cheer from the crowd after Maye's 1st completed pass.

What is up with the end of game run the clock out without trying too hard BS? Treat it like a practice to get experience with time management. Then again, they were probably just happy that Maye survived, so I understand why they did it. Still really sucks as a fan.
