I wouldn't place too much hope in Jake Andrews. Perhaps he'll be a surprise, but I'll wait and see. We need a stud at Center too.

He wasn’t a failure at all. He started every game his rookie season. In year 2 he injured his knee in camp and it was an issue all season but he was their best OL and playing really well when the knee finally went. That was pretty much the unanimous view at the time. This is year 3.

On one hand, based on conventional wisdom I would agree. But at the same time, with the way the game has changed, guards have become very valuable due to teams beefing up their interior rush. Belichick may have drafted Strange to try to fortify that interior line to help keep Mac Jones from getting pushed in the middle and give him better space to step up in the pocket, a la Brady. Poor tackle play can somewhat be worked around if the QB can shuffle and get the ball out. I think taking a guard in the lower 1st round doesn't seem as odd as it used to if you're confident he'll be pretty good.

Current day, they seem to have more than enough options at guard long-term, especially once they have a better RT which allows Onwenu to go back to guard, so seeing if Strange can become a good center instead would be ideal since they're significantly lacking there behind Andrews, and Andrews already had a short time remaining even before the injury.

Strange shouldn't be counted on. Even if he becomes a solid starting Center, he'll be wanting the 5th Year of his rookie deal picked up (for which he's not done anything 3 years into his rookie contract as it is.

What Strange WANTS doesn't matter. What matters is that it's highly doubtful the Pats pick up the 5th yr option. It's more likely that they let it ride with a prove it type statement to Strange.

No. They couldn't have "just re-signed Karras".

1) Karras wanted a chance at a starting job. He wasn't going to get that with the Pats.
2) The Pats Cap wasn't in great shape. They couldn't really afford a $6M/yr reserve player.

Looking at things in hindsight is always 20/20 and easy to 2nd guess. However, Strange seemed to have what Karras didn't. Versatility and smarts to play either Center or OT as well as OG. If you want to look at things in hindsight, he shouldn't have tried to play through his injury last year, making it worse and extending the recovery time.

Yeah I doubt they pick up that option. They need to decide to pick it up or not by this coming May, before he’s played his 4th year. They probably won’t know very much more about him by then since he will have maybe played half of this year. Even if he goes on to prove himself as a capable center, an extension for him won’t cost more AAV than the 5th year option for a lineman. So may as well make him continue to prove his capability and health in 2025 first, then do a deal with him after the season before he hits free agency if he does “prove it”.

If he "proves it", then there would be no reason to re-sign with us before testing free agency.

If he shows himself to be worth being part of the future in the rest of THIS year, then we could try to extend him before next season starts.

Karras is a marginal center. He was horrible as a guard. Especially moving to a zone blocking system. Ever see Karrass pull around? He is molasses slow. He can never get there. They would have had to change their entire plan just for Karras.

As a center, he's serviceable, but then again, Burrow is among the most pressured QBs in the entire league (not blaming Karras for that, because I don't watch them enough to know who is at fault).

That's what I said.

They'll make the 4th year a prove it year with the promise of a contract if he performs.

None of that should stop the Pats drafting a Center, which I already stated they need to do. Having a guy who can back up at OC and OG the way that Yates and Karras did will be a good thing regardless of how Strange pans out.
