Just finished QB and WR all-22.
Will start with QB's and then WR.
I tried to think about if you switched Rodgers and Jacoby, would the results have been different. Jets still win but closer game. Jacoby had about 4 plays he had plays there and did not make them, he had 2 chunk plays he missed. Not blaming Jacoby for the loss, play calling and poor pass pro, mainly from the rookies and 1 play from Onwenu doomed the offense.
AVP has this idea in his head that Maye is playing QB. He has many plays where there is an unaccounted-for rusher that is supposed to be negated by the QB running backwards fast enough to dump the short pass.
Very first play of the game is an example:
Play action to Jacoby left, line blocks right to simulate a run, DE is unblocked, the DE just head to the QB because they know they run this play and the DE in pursuit down the line is less likely to make a lay on the RB vs the QB. Henry is lead blocker and sneaks out to the right, when Jacoby turns the rusher is 3 yards from him full steam ahead, Henry is already open and looking. He gets the pass off jumping backwards while being hit. This play call is done over and over again with similar results. It gained 0 yards. You have zero threat of the QB going around the rushing end. ABP, teams are ready for this play, until Maye is in and has a chance to run away from the DE you need to chip that guy or don't call that play until you have a dumb team that did not watch film and tells their end to follow the RB on every play.
Teams are onto you AVP, stop, Please!
Jacoby Brissett-He had about 4 plays that he missed, he had 1 really good play that he threw the ball down field to DD as he was getting hit, great decision, great timing, just a good play overall, was not a tight window but good throw with everything going on. He made some solid throws otherwise but only the 1 throw I though looked good/great. On first series he had a free blitzer but had Rhamondre for a huge gain on a dump off. Threw to covered Polk falling off back foot about 30 yards in the air. I'm guessing first read but when you have 6 rushers, a free rusher, you recognize the blitz you go tom your outlet, which is a 15 yard gain. He never seems to see the blitz coming and rarely adjusts off the initial read ot go to the shorter throw. Don't get it.
Second drive he had first read open, DD in the flat, would need to make 1 guy miss for any real gain, does not throw, rolls right hits Polk, Polk was open the whole play, got to him late. Not good processing but ended with positive play. He hits a nice throw to Henry in middle, is late getting it to him but he's so open does not matter but continues to be late with timing, really wants to see a guy open before throwing.
Next pass Play misses the open Hooper down the field, one of the very bad throws for Jacoby, just missed an open guy with no pressure. 3rd down, has DD again on short left and looks at him but does not throw, would be short of first but, again, yac possible to get to first, instead now gets pressure and sack. The QB's need to be trained to get the ball out to first read if open, regardless of whether there might be a better play, you don't have time, just get the couple yards and avoid the sack.
Next few series uneventful, a couple paly he has no chance, another stupid naked PA bootleg with a free rusher, he had one play with an open TE in the middle but tried a deep covered crosser. Not much on Jacoby for most of those series.
Last series for him: Thye set up a TE screen, CB blitz from the side of the screen, this leaves 3 blockers and 1 defender and the TE. Nobody near him. This is a 20 yard gain minimum. Jacoby pumps because he's afraid the cb will knock the ball down, he should not have pumped just drop it over him, he then had to threw off back foot to avoid the cb pressure and leaves a wounded duck short. PERFECT play call, a screen to a side they blitz, OMG, you have to make that throw. Next play free blitzer right away, no chance for Jacoby. Yes, the line could not pass pro on many plays, Jacoby was not winning the game playing his best, but it is frustrating to watch the slow processing, the inaccuracy down the field, the lack of seeing obvious blitzes, the late throws even on completions, there is just not much that is good even taking into account the huge pressure he faces.
Drake Maye-The bad: First play, telegraphed pass to TE, I will chalk it up to nervousness but not a good pass, not timed well, maybe they should have more reps together and get the timing down. It was so fast a pick would have been a phenomenal play but batting it up into the air was a more likely pick.
Sack at goal line: Dumb play call, 4 slants, which are all quick asses so realistically you have 1 read on the first slant, which was doubled, he should have just thrown it in the dirt, by time he looks to next slant, also covered, he is sacked. Play call is atrocious but Maye needs to realize that and understand he has 1 read and just has to get rid of it. If he had solid protection, he can use some running ability to buy time but he does not so get rid of it.
The OK and Good-The play he got pancaked was, IMO, a clear attempt to take advantage of the defense. It almost looks like a called QB draw but IMO is just fast processing by Maye, as soon as he hits his drop he looks to run. Receivers all running outs, 1 deep safety, you see the middle open, the DL is running a stunt so Maye goes left just inside 75 Jacobs blocking, the guy on Jacobs just gets off the block to slow Maye down. The TE at top below eventually gets some separation on the out, only player that gets any separation if stayed in pocket and can hit that window is a 5 yard gain and a first, he gets thru there on the run its 20 yards IMO, 10n yard guaranteed but with an angle he's even got a chance to beat safety and could be even more than 20. I like the fast processing, live I thought he panicked, on tape I like the processing, like the idea, like the big play potential. Just needed to sneak by Jacobs guy and big play.
The other play people mentioned on the TE out that was inaccurate was a throwaway, the TE had a yard separation right when he broke out, May went to throw before the break and then realized the TE rounded the route, let the Defensive player cut to the inside, at that point had to throw it away or pick 6 potential. He was the second read on the pla,y so time was running out, he had Baker all the way back to the opposite sideline, probably 4th read but not expecting him to take that much time. Instant pressure ruined a couple other plays.
His scramble for first, right read, right play.
The slant to DD, not sure how to judge this one, DD was afraid of the 3 guys converging so alligator armed it. Was first read, was open, DD could have split the defenders, he had time to catch and get down, Maye could have tried to anticipate him sitting due to defenders, throw was accurate, read was correct, was open, not sure how to grade this 1. I think Maye needs to throw it as a sit down, and maybe with more reps that's what he does.
Of course, his best play was the one he moved away from rusher, around edge on a stunt so excellent pocket movement, moved LB with his head/eyes and hit DD behind him. Jacoby has not made a play like this in the entire season, or pre-season.
Perfect play by Maye on that 1. IMO he just needs reps, reps and more reps. He needs to play and get the mistakes and nerves out, build some chemistry.
Tyquan Thronton-I think I've figured out why he's never going to make it. He has no release, he is slow off the line, his one move is to stutter step back and forth and then run to the left of the CB and then slow to accelerate. He does get open enough, but always late in the route. I was hoping he made strides as seemed to be open enough but no. If you have enough time to throw, he would make a decent #3 receiver with his speed. I think his hands stink too though thus I think he's gone after this year, I think he should be, anyways.
KJ Osborne: Not good, does not get open, 4th wr at best. Should also be gone after this year. Now I see why wr can't make catches, 2 of them really stink.
Polk: Still most open of all wr, drew Gardner for many plays, competed, had a few plays where he was open, of course Gardner shuts down the best receivers. Polk is a solid #2, I like him, he's a baller, he blocks, he goes all out, he gets open enough for an NFL #2, has shown good hands. Unfortunately, he gets benched some plays where they play TT and KJ, WHY? He needs a rest put in Baker.
Baker: He's better than KJ and TT, he has some release moves, quickness, better burst than Polk. Has to prove he has hands, has to run routes as well as Polk but he is talented, he just needs to play ahead of TT and KJ and see if he can get over his weaknesses.
Henry/Hooper/DD: We know what these guys are, Henry a good #1 TE, DD a solid slot receiver, Hooper a good backup TE that works well in 2 TE sets. These guys ae great to have on your team, good NFL players for their rolls.
Kendrick Bourne comes back I'd dump TT or KJ from the rotation. In the interim, they should play the rookies, if Baker fails throw in Boutte. I'm done with TT and KJ.
