I was going to put this in the Post game Thread but after doing the review it stood out that the comments being made about the porous offensive line and Jacoby running for his life it seems those comments, after tape review, were not true. So thought it deserved its own thread.
The first half overall good by the offensive line. Remember that even good teams pressure rate is 1 in 3 drop backs, the Bucs, with an All-Pro LT, let 1 guy get 4.5 sacks (mostly against RT). You don't expect perfection. IMO They will be improved when Sow gets back
-First drive first 2 plays no issues, 3rd play Jacoby had plenty of time, Lowe had his man blocked, Jordan came over to help as he had nobody to block and pushed the D-Line deep away from Lowe, he then had time to run around Lowe and pressure Jacoby BUT Jacoby had plenty of time to throw, until All-22 hard to tell if he had anyone to throw to.
-Next drive was TD, great protection on most passes, great run blocking, the 1 play Jacoby had some pressure was a double CB blitz where Hooper just got 1 guy and Rhamondre got the other and Jacoby just had to step up a tad.
-So first 10 plays line was great.
Onwenu got beat by a LB and stuffed a run play (Defense is paid too?!)
Next 5 pass plays and 2 run plays all good, including 2 blitz pickups on 2 of the passes.
-So 18 plays and so far Onwenu beat on a run play only negative.
-Robinson was then pushed back toward QB but play was unaffected
-Onwenu then got beat wide, Jacoby ended up stepping up, going right and throwing away, I think he had options here but need to wait for all-22 but rusher went behind him, and he was not touched.
-Onwenu got beat on pass rush, Robinson also pushed back, would have been incomplete but defensive penalty bailed them
-Screen, a play action pass and a run play all well blocked.
-Lowe got beat around edge, Jacoby ducked under the tackler, incomplete but penalty saved the drive again.
-Seahawks then blitz 6, all picked up, plenty of time but Jacoby throws away, will need all-22 to see if right play
-Demario Douglas misses a block on a safety to stuff a run play
-All day for Jacoby in Red Zone, ends up throwing it away
Thus a couple plays their guys got beat but overall Jacoby was rarely touched and the 2 worst plays had defensive penalties in the backfield that cancelled them out.
-Last drive before half starting 10 yard line.
-run play, just a good defensive play
-Pass play good protection but incomplete
-Lowe gets beat around edge but wide enough Jacoby can just step up, unfortunately Andrews gets beat inside but somehow the guy misses Jacoby and Jacoby rolls right, has Henry for a first and makes a bad throw. Andrews was just beat, Lowe I give a pass here. Jacoby took an 8 yard drop on the play before but took a 10 yard drop on this play, Lowe still got his guy just wide enough but that's asking a lot of a Tackle to have a 10-yard drop, right on the goal line.
That was the first half. 13 points, on pace for 26, average winning team scores 23. All good. Line only had a couple negative plays
Second Half
-Play Action all day to throw ends up QB run.
-Hold on Lowe on Running Play where RB bounced outside.
-2 well blocked run plays
-Play Action with a screen, Hooper let his guy go a little early so pressure, but screen was blown up anyways, throw away
-Lowe beat around the edge
-Onwenu beat around edge, again pushes guy just deep enough but Robinson gets pushed back inside and Jacoby crushed.
-Next drive 3 straight runs, good blocking on 2 of the runs then Robinson gets beat on the 3rd one for a run stuff.
-Pass play and 2 run plays fine
-Blitz on a play where the TE blocks and then goes out for a pass, expect Robinson to come over to block guy TE let go but too slow, still completes pass as Jacoby runs backwards and TE is wide open.
-4 Red Zone Runs all good blocking.
4th Quarter 9 minutes left-Up to this point line is rating pretty highly
-3 runs 1 a run blitz, all 3 blocked fine but rb slips on 3rd run.
-They then had a huge run where Gibson made the unblocked defender missed, play design was asking Jordan to pull and get that guy but no chance on that design, otherwise well blocked for large gain.
-Good run play block
-Good run block, bad cut and decision by Rhamondre.
-Play before blocked Punt: Onwenu got beat but Jacoby never saw it happening, was looking left. At same time Andrews was beat on stunt which Jacoby saw, he had time to throw away, but he never saw Onwenu's guy until he went to throw and took a sack. Better pocket presence from Jacoby could have avoided sack. Sack was on Onwenu though.
Overtime
-Andrews beat a bit on run play but Rhamondre also made bad cut
-A little pressure Onwenu side but he recovered and kept guy wide, Jacoby still stepped up into Robinson being pushed back, complete diving catch
-Last play was wacky play design. I think because Lowe was out they put Jacobs as the LT, moved Wallace to the 3rd tackle on right but nobody outside him, thus illegal formation. However, they had 3 blockers to that side vs 4 defenders so LB unblocked, they also clearly telegraphed they were running there by putting Wallace there. QB option would have been 2 on 1, hand off to TT on the end around would have been a race between him and corner. All moot because nobody noticed the illegal formation, and the defense was perfectly set, should have called time out or audibled out of that play. Unless the play is just designed for Rhamondre to run over the LB?
Individual Players
Michael Jordan-Solid game, gets the most out of his talent, less mistakes than any lineman.
Layden Robinson-Rookie was schooled a bit by Williams. Was mostly good on run plays though missed a cut block, also slow on TE screen getting across to block. Regularly pushed back by Williams. Sets a bit too high, Williams gets hands near shoulder pads and pushes back. Robinson needs to stay low in Pass Blocking, but not weight forward, he backs up gets too tall and Williams basically bull rushed Robinson. He is so strong he went backwards and not down but steadily backwards. He got beat on another play but RB picked up his pass rusher. It was 3-4 plays but enough to cause some pressure. As a straight run blocker continues to not let guys get off him. He will get some coaching on getting lower and sure he already has but now will realize he needs to practice it. Sidy Sow would be good here while Robinson works on technique. He gets that straightened out he'll be a stud Guard, but he needs to work that out.
Dude is very raw, good run blocker, poor pass blocker right now, next year is his year but expect he will struggle in pass pro and Sidy Sow is the real answer,
Andrews-He was solid but beat inside near the goal line could have been huge sack and was beat on stunt helped lead to sack before blocked FG.
Vederian Lowe-Hopeful knee injury is not bad, he's been balling with the talent he has. Had the hold on the run play, got beat wide on a play that was a defensive penalty so did not matter, on the End Zone pass where Andrews was beat he got his guy to go by him and just miss Jacoby but 10 yard drop, got the guy to 11 so I'm OK with that, got beat around the edge 1 other time in 2nd half. That is pretty solid LT play in the NFL. Chiefs would kill to have Lowe as LT! He's not the most gifted LT, there are very few highly gifted LT's. However, at 26 years old after a terrible 2023 he is showing progress and seems to be getting the most out of his talent. Hope he comes back from knee quickly.
Mike Onwenu-Overall a pretty disappointing game for the best lineman on the team. Got beat on the critical 3rd down before the blocked FG, 1st half beat on run play that his guy stuffed, also got saved by defensive penalty when beat on pass rush, he was close to beat 2 other times but JUST pushed guy wide enough. I think overall he played OK but with his biggest mistake came at a crucial point in the game a big negative there. I think his pass blocking will grade out worse than it should because even though he was beat a few times he was till able to push his guy just past the QB. Expect more from your best guy. Ideally he's a guard, Wallace RT and Lowe at LT. If stud LT available in draft obviously put that guy in for Lowe.
Caeden Wallace-Looks like starting LT if Lowe is out. I really like Wallace and think he would be fine at RT. He has played well but mainly asked to run block as extra lineman. Blocked 1 Pass in OT fine. Based on preseason he'll need to have improved technique or will be susceptible to bull rushes. I think he's a definite starting Right Tackle long term in the NFL, not sure Pass protection wise if he's ready but only basing that on pre-season. The guy will be a good player, very interested to see how much development he needs. I have no idea if he can play LT as have not seen it enough on film.
If Onwenu played better and Sidy Sow was in for Robinson, who struggles on pass pro, I think things would have looked great. Otherwise, they played like a middle of the pack line, not the worst line in the league, not a porous line, not a line getting Jacoby killed etc. but equal to what you see from line play throughout the league. It's not great for many teams, which leaves us pretty average until they are 100% healthy.
I think they would be a better group with everyone healthy, especially Sidy Sow.
Running backs other than the slip and 2 bad cuts by Rhamondre played well.
