I'm going to make a reasonable assumption that this team isn't going to make the playoffs. Anything is still possible, of course (except the JEST not sucking).

So, which scenario is better in the long run (i.e., over the remainder of Drake Maye's rookie deal)?

(A) They finish with a top-5 pick. They have a scenario similar to this year's, except they can trade down more easily.
(B) They almost make the playoffs, and end up with a middle-of-the-pack pick. This is obviously less good for the draft, but would arguably make the team a more attractive destination for veteran FAs.

This team needs an influx of talent in the worst way. Barely missing the playoffs isn’t going to change hardly any fa’s minds. We need young, blue chippers. We need tackles, WR’s and DL. A top 5 pick in each rd strengthens the odds of landing a few of those guys.

Winning cures all. It reframes the growth that needs to happen in a positive light. It gets you phone calls with free agents who wouldn’t have given you the time of day otherwise. I think this team is still going to finish well under .500 (4-6 wins) but hopefully is promising enough.

Most players give their all to earn (guaranteed) lettuce not always... the chips fall from there.

Winning because that means your team is on the right track.

Ask the brown, lions, cards, jags and whatever other bottom dwellers from the past decade or so thinks. Top 5 picks don’t guarantee ****. Winning does.

If you draft for need instead of BPA, the advantage drafting earlier in the round is limited. What about Gonzo and White? Both drafted as BPA, and both looking like studs. Gonzo was 17th in the 1st round, White was 14th in the 2nd round. Have to draft BPA!!!

Winning.

you may choose a bit later in the draft, but you don't get stood up in free agency *cough* calvin ridley debacle *cough* etc etc

As of right now, OL is the biggest need followed by someone emerging at WR.

I'm intrigued to see how White does this year after having a massive game week 1. If Gonzo shuts down Metcalf or whoever he defends tomorrow, he will also be on track for a massive 2nd year jump.

Re-watching the highlights, Uche looked like a pest in the backfield on passing situations. I think he'll have a bounce back year as Mayo looked pretty damn aggressive bringing the heat, so players will have opportunities.

With two good tackles they could have won this division this year. Bare minimum made the playoffs and been a tough out depending on if Maye was playing and how well.

Putting all that aside, I always want to see them win. Rooting to lose is for losers.

That depends on the difference in talent at various positions.

In any case, Belichick's process for assigning "value" to players is part of the reason he's not HC anymore.

(B) you said it spot on. If the team looks competitive this season.. even in losses, and say we end up 8-9, with Drake starting next season. It would be a huge lift for the franchise.

Agreed. As I've posted this defense is difficult for any OC to conquer becuase they never stay in the same formation. Sure an OC can put on film seeing them morph.. but the QB will never know exactly when. It's just so advantageous whenever a D is aggressive. I hated the sit back zone Patricia defense. Ugh!

This defense is too good to allow the Pats to be eligible for a top pick. The team can't afford to lose another year before the defense begins to age out. Better to build momentum for next year instead of playing for a higher pick. Besides picking 3 last year was only possible because the offense and special teams sabotaged multiple games. As long as special teams continue to play well and the offense is simply bad the team should end up pick 10 or later.

BB has nothing to do with the strategic decision to draft for need or BPA. Odd comment. Are the BB haters ever going to heal?
