Meet Our Free Safety

Safties play in the mid-field. Defensive players under 220 lbs. are secondary players. Do you think Mapu is a DB or a safety? Mapu is not on the DL or a LB. A Midfielder is a soccer position, not a position in American football.

Midfielder is my nod to Off The Grid, who was the first I remember to use that term for Linebackers...

Our man is a Weak-Side Linebacker; let him play that position here (where we still need help) and not have him learn a brand new position at which he heretofore has shown very little comfort playing.

Your are correct capn... he's listed as LB...

I think we understand his value the same. Hard for me to think of a 217lb guy as a LB. He is taller, heavier, and slower than McCourty, but Devin would drop down and cover a TEs. Hopefully Mapu moves around and plays a hybrid position. Still a safety in my book.

Mapu is about 230... I know mayo said he added some weight so.. he's likely closer to the 240 range now..

Even 235 is ok for a coverage type LB. Let him spy QB’s, RB’s and TE’s too.
Yes, I've also mentioned that.. he's perfect for Allen and other running QBs &, RBs out the backfield.. he will have plenty of opportunities in camp.. with my guy Gibson out the backfield..

Let's be even clearer: Marty McPoo is Not a Safety; he's a Midfielder defending the Flats where RBs & TEs roam.
and Dugger is indeed a safety who is a midfielder defending the flats where RB's and TE's roam

Mapu was 216 lbs. at the combine. Independent verified measurement.
While this is true, that was well over a year ago. They said then they wanted him to bulk up and play linebacker and currently Patriots.com has him listed at 230… which is the typical weight of a weak side linebacker. He had room to get stronger and adding 15 pounds was not unreasonable, he was too thin.

Folks seem to think that we don't have one and that we need to move another CB or two to FS.

Hawkins is exactly what we need as our 4th safety: a player who plays on 5 special teams units and who is a free safety. To repeat, he isn't a CB or SS converting to free safety; Hawkins is a free safety.
Hawkins played some FS and wasn’t bad. Dugger had the majority of snaps there…I think.

And while I’m at it…Marco Wilson over Alex Austin.

Jon Jones played some yesterday facing the offense. I think this defense is a lot like it was under Bill, they don't want you knowing who the free safety is on any given play. They disguise it well, and their players have the versatility to play everywhere.
