The biggest most pleasant surprise for me was the competent coaching on both sides of the ball. AVP schemed around what Brissett could do and didn't put too much on his plate. Covington called a solid game and was true to his word about being more aggressive this season, a good amount of pressure through a nice mix of looks. He forced more than a few checkdowns.

Very competent coaching today. I think we really lucked out with Mayo. Contrast that with the string of unforced coaching errors Taylor made at the end of the game.

Surprising, but great win. D was awesome. Brissett was poised. O-line showed up. Stevenson was a stud.

Interested to see the snap counts, people mentioned in the gdt that there wasn’t much rotation on d? Would hope to get more out of our depth.

I couldn’t really see what we were doing with chase. Was he doubled? Who was gonzo on mostly?

Also to my eye it didn’t look like the LT got much help on hendrickson on alot of plays but could have missed it which i thought was suprising / risky. Also could’ve sworn i saw both chuks and lowe at LT. Interested to see the OL analysis too.

If they were rooting for the Patriots to win they aren't the BB fanboyz I was talking about. It's the ones who would rather the team lose than concede that the coaching staff did a better job of putting this team in a position to win than last year's staff did. Yes some Patriots fans are petty enough to just want to be right rather than have the team win
Once again your assumptions may be incorrect.

First off, this is largely the same coaching staff minus Bill and O'Brien.

I don't remember people saying Belichick can't coach. A lot was said about him as a GM.

But mostly what your post leaves out is that this team now has a competent QB. Going out there with Mac Jones is a constant losing proposition.

QB remains the most important position in all of pro sports.

Seemingly it wasn't a huge emphasis on the passing attack. Polk should be starting. Our 2nd round pick played well all preseason. I expect AVP to do more in the passing game week 2.
I...don't. I'm not sure they can do a whole lot more, other than a few more hard playaction throws. The offensive line is a sieve.

Okorafor was pulled in the 1st quarter for Lowe, because he was that bad.

I 100% feel like AVP called a game that BB would have loved. That 6th OL is a great way to get a rook experience while setting up a kill the clock run game. I loved the game plan and think that once Maye is out there that it will make the passing game an actual weapon thereby making the run game even more impactful. I am ****ing elated right now. I saw a couple 17-10 Pats win in banners but did anyone have 16-10?

I agree those are 2 different things and it was just a coincidence that we had a 37 year old QB at the time. Ummmm what???
It was directly related to having TB thus implying that TB was going to decline.
Oh my god. He showed a study of 37 year olds BECAUSE Brady was 37.

I'll say it again: according to Kraft, he showed them this study WHEN they drafted Garoppolo.

This is called good planning.

WHat he didn't do is show Kraft a study of Brady declining.

I'm not sure why I had to write this 3 times as the distinctions should be self-evident.

They will put up more passing yards. Not saying we are going to go for 400.. but I can see Brissett going for close to 300.. had he hit Thornton on a few deep post routes we'd have more production. Nevertheless good to get the win.

More of an emphasis on the passing game might very well have led to a loss. The coaches played to the strength of each aspect of the team.

If you have a top Defense, and a top ST unit, then run-first is a fine idea.

To put it another way. The OL is very good at run blocking, and relatively weak at pass blocking. We have a great running back. And we have a mediocre passer at QB.

Why would anyone want to emphasize the passing game? We do need the passing game to improve, a low bar.

AS AN ASIDE
I agree that Polk should be starting, opposite Thornton.

I see. Lt needs an upgrade anyway but if lowe misses time we’re in trouble . Hopefully chuks can still help at rt if needed

Van Pelt impressed me a lot - what really had me getting out of my chair, was running zone runs the entire first quarter, and then on 3rd and goal from the 4, run their first gap run, and Cincinnati was unprepared for it, busted wide open. Then they did the same thing later on, similar result. He called the game with a good flow and feel it seemed like, even though the Patriots were heavy run, it didn't seem predictable.

This is why they play the games. Some upsets today.

Bengals are a bad team. Higgens wouldn’t have been enough. There’s some dysfunction in the locker room.

White is in for a big year.

Stevenson had a big game and carried the team.

You have to have time on those post routes though, even if it's Thornton. It seemed like if the ball didn't come out in under 2 seconds, and there wasn't a hard playaction that everyone bit on, it was a heavily pressured throw.

Good point. When I say emphasize the pass meaning put up more than 120 yards passing. There will Come games we need to pass more.. not get away from the run but hit more seam routes and slants. Hitting Thornton on those deep routes when we do take them. Jacoby is capable of putting up say 260-280 passing yards. Polk not starting is my only nit pick.

OK, I see it. When I first read your comment that is not how I read. Makes much more sense now and I agree with you as long as that was the approach. We are drafting JG because TB is old as **** and when QBs are old as **** they tend to get worse....Look.

Something is not right on that team. They should be better than that.

True. Lowe was giving up those pressures and Jacoby did a great job of getting away from pressure running for conversions.. so it's a start. The offense will become more balanced as the season goes on.
