Why Cut Zappe?

Hindsight but too bad Bill didn’t trade Zappe at his peak value after the Lions game in 22. We’d get something back a lot better than the nothing we got back for him now.

The reason to cut Zappe is the same as all of the other pedestrian cuts : there are other players that’ll make more of a difference on Sundays. And even there - another dozen players could easily be cut if suitable replacements were on this roster.

Zappe is just another in a long list of ‘why did we cut’ players over the past few decades. Very very very rarely does one of those players ever become ‘a somebody’. PK Gould is one obvious choice. I know he was behind a more-than-capable place kicker here in Foxborough, but he ended up getting cut and then enjoyed a marvellous career. Beyond he……. not many more impact players are let go.

I know because Biscuit is a world beater. We need to be thankful he’s such an upgrade- right?
He's not, but he's a safe hand who isn't going to make too many mistakes. He won't make big plays. But he's not going to have games like Zappe did at the end of last year when he crumbled. That's the difference. Zappe basically just had a speedrun of Mac's career. Looked promising to start, cracks started to show, the more pressure he had the more confidence he lost, by the end was a total disaster.

There's just no utility to Zappe

You aren't putting Zappe in before Maye, cmon stop lol.

zappe hour is over?

and we cut Zappe because he is so bad that no one in league wanted him on their 53-man roster as a #2 or #3, even though he has experience as a starter.
He’s the #3 QB for the Chiefs. Sure, PS, but if Mahomes or Wentz gets dinged up, he’s on the roster as QB2. Clearly reality doesn’t align with your rhetoric.

I don't get cutting Zappe at all. Not that he would ever make a difference in wins/losses, but why leave the team with two rookies as backups?

Drake Maye is either ready to play or not. If he's ready, start him immediately. There's no comparison between Maye and Brissett. If Maye is not ready, don't put him in harms way after the starter has been injured. Maye is the future.

The team can survive with one less jag on the practice squad instead of the team, since no one else would ever be claimed, if they cut the right player. I get what Zappe is, but the most important project is to do what's best for Maye, not be forced to use him.
I firmly believe the team was under the impression zap would clear waivers and they would be able to sign him to the PS. Zap and his agent likely felt it was best for him to go elsewhere. Brissett is the *starting QB on borrowed time.. I don't believe he has a long leash. Also if the organization wants they could sign zap off KCs practice squad.

Tannehill is still available I think.
Imagine that. Guy got a big contract not too long ago when everyone thought the Titans were the next Power house.

Yeah, that’s why the Chiefs signed him. They suck too.
How many QB's are there on the various Practice Squads?

ALL these quarterbacks have been passed up by 32 teams. None are on 53-man rosters. If there is an injury on ANY team, that team can have its choice from the Practice Squads of all the 32 teams.
===========
A team does suck because of the quality of one of their 16 Practice Squad players that can be cut or picked off by another team at any time.

A player doesn't suck because he is on a Practice Squad. He is simply not good enough for one of the 32 teams to want him on their roster.
==================
If we think that there are players on 53 man rosters that suck, certainly players that are on Practice Squads at the same positions are really likely to be no better.
=========
To be bunt, one definition of "sucks" is if you are healthy and no good enough to make a 53-man team. Of course, there are developmental players who are there with hopes of developing into future contributors, but FOR NOW, they add little.

I don't get why if Brissett is hurt early, they intend to bring Maye in the first quarter of the first game if he's not ready?

If Maye is ready, then play him now. If not, hold him back until he is.

So, Zappe is on the KC Practice Squad if Brissette get hurt, in which case, Zappe would jump to be the #3 on the patriots?

There is still some prime Everglades stock available for a reasonable price.
===========================
The patriots made their choice. We chose Milton. It is really just that simple.

Perhaps, we tried to get Zappe to run our scout squad as our #4, and convince Zappe that he should accept that role. That's fine. It is grossincompetence if they thought that Zappe would want such a role.
=========
BOTTOM LINE
Zappe is a failed 4th round choice who has failed who couldn't make the roster in 2023 and who replaced with a 6th round pick in 2024.

We will move on and find another #4 for the Practice Squad.

I believe they know maye is ready. But don't want to deviate from the plan. I believe if Brissett struggles mightily.. from that shoulder...and is throwing INTs and we are blown out. I can see mayo pulling him and putting Drake in.

I don't care if they think he's ready.

Until the offensive line improves, he's not ready.

Agreed. It was just a mention to the post of zap not being here. I think the team figured they could sign him to the PS. I'm sure zap figured he's better off somewhere else. I'm fine with Milton.

When Brissett goes down he will get put in. So...
Whether you want him to start right away or not Maye will be better prepared than he is game 1. One angle that I feel is underplayed in the decision to start Brissett game 1 is that it should put a chip on Maye's shoulder to show that he is ready, willing and able to take the job for many years. Even though he is saying and doing the right things, being a competitor I am sure that not starting pisses him off in a good way. Better to have Maye force the issue in practice than getting the job via injury.

Spot on! One thing I can say about maye is the guy oozes confidence. He looks to me like he has that and more. I've said personally that Brissett is on borrowed time. This season is all about seeing what we have, and creating the foundation. If Brissett starts making errant throws, missing open guys, INTS and any semblance of how it looked last season you can bet mayo will sit him and put Drake in. AVP has no say in that. That is all on mayo he's the HC.

I'm excited to have football back! I'm looking for progress and growth this season I know we aren't expected to win anything.
