He (Tyrone Wheatley Jr) was waived/injured August 4. So he's no longer a Patriot.

He was waived, but the report - and transaction wire - had him reverting to IR. That's where I guess I'm confused.

Incorrect. Wheatley Jr is on the Pats IR.. He's done for the season unless the Pats give him an injury settlement.

I haven't seen his name since...but I'll go back through and look again.

It's either a clerical error or some sort, the team changed their mind in some capacity, or the player disputed that he was actually injured enough to be waived/injured and so the team changed the designation afterwards.

John Morgan showed up with the same reserve designation, and then the injury settlement shortly after, followed by a termination. Wheatley only appears to have the designation. No further transactions since.

It's just weird because all transactions are usually noted by the league, even as it changes from reserve, settlement, termination, etc. Nothing on him since 8/3.
 
Note Slye is also a significantly heftier guy than Ryland - relevant with the new kickoff return rules.

I might be mistaken but he can't return to the Pats without becoming a free agent first, either at the end of the league year or during the season after an injury settlement and then waiting some number of weeks.

We often cut 6th and 7th rounders, and sometimes 5th rounders.
We don't. Bill did. I just think this regime is going to value "their guys" over someone else's, be that Bill's or otherwise. Character issues not withstanding. All things are equal, Team Wolf/Mayo players stick.

The previous GM had two fistfulls of rings, these guys do not. Bill could jettison a guy without fear of retribution because of his resume. Wolf and Mayo may stick with their guys and make sure they are given a fair chance. Maybe.

If nothing else, this is TBD. We'll see how ruthless they are.
