I agree, I've had this same discussion with Wozzy.. he has no leverage whatsoever.. no one can definitely say watts won't be good in this defense.
Watts won’t be good as a starting tackle… I just said it.

He was terrible as a starting DT in the past, there is zero evidence to the contrary.

We don't know that to be true here.. watts said himself in his intro interview that he and his agent both said the patriots defense fits him best for his skill set.. I will say this.. if goddy so chose to sit out.. this defense won't miss a beat!

I don’t know much about Watts…had to google him. In 2021 he had 5 sacks, 2 forced fumble’s, 10 QB hits and 46 tackles while playing 17 games and starting 9 of those. He’s 28 years old. I think I would be ok if he got those numbers in 2024.

You said it! Mayo won't ask him to be this all wold player, he likely is in a rotational role now, goddy plays on 1st and 2dn down.. he's not a rusher so he's not in on 3rd downs mostly.. watts gives you a little with his rush abilities.. I liked the signing.. however his role could increase should Godchaux choose to sit.

He got a nice extension in 22.. as u said he doesn't rush the passer. Those are the guys who get paid. Not to rehash.. but even patriots HOF Vince had to fight hard for his contract.

Yep, that's why Busto Brace was drafted in 2009: as leverage vs Wilfork in contract negotiations during that spring. Thanks Bill!

I like him and think we could get another 5 years out of him (a la lawrence guy), But I hate the idea of rewarding hold-in's. If you're going to extend, do it early, no more after xx date, and be prepared to move on from them.

Don't know about 5 more years, but I would certainly guarantee his salary this year and re-think matters next March...

Brace wasn't drafted as leverage. He was drafted as "insurance". There's a difference that you have never comprehended and never will.

The two concepts are not mutually exclusive

Wilfork signed his deal in 2010. I wouldn't say it was leverage at the time because Brace was just drafted. But, the intention was for Brace to show enough in a year to where they could play hardball with Wilfork. That didn't happen and Bill probably quickly realized this. He had no idea where to put Brace on the field. That was one of the most idiotic selections during Bill's tenure. That 2009 draft could've been like the 2019 dynasty killing draft if it weren't for the bounce back 2010 draft and Brady playing forever.

When brace was drafted, like so many other players bill drafted he had health concerns. As all of a players medical history is disclosed when they enter the draft obviously. Braces struggles were as a direct result to his medical condition. Realistically brace should have never been advised to continue playing football. Vince was on a ridiculous 6 year rookie deal that players union should have never allowed! What I rem curren and others reporting around the time was he couldn't maintain his playing weight, his conditioning and he had knee issue.

Vince almost left the organization until RK stepped in. Your correct on your post.. especially brady playing forever.. I think we need to give some respect to Alex Guerrero.

I believe what cap'n is basically saying is Bill knew Vince was on a long rookie deal when those crazy 6 year contracts were handed out.. so Bill knew Vince contract was coming up.. Brace a local guy, solid player at BC he had envionsed him playing next to Vince.. however I'm sure Vince likely took it as his replacement. Especially how Bill played hardball with him. Just my 2 cent..

Saying a bad player elsewhere or a situational pass rusher will magically become something he’s not here is delusion.

We saw his results as a starting tackle… the worst run defense in the NFL.

Let's wait and see how this all plays out.. I remember Kyle van not being after though too, and many others before they played in this defense..

wasn't he a detroit lion, like Tavai. maybe we have the secret sauce for converting Lion's castoffs?

Yes. He was.. van noy become a great player while he was in NE.. guy was a clutch player that 2018 SB run.. Tavai yes another great player that came into the NE system and thrived. Guys all around the league talk to each other they know what systems work for them and don't work for them. Watts is a guy that can come in and carve out a role for himself.
