Godchaux Speaks Out on his contract

@Zuma @PatsFan2

I think goddy is over valuing him a bit. Solid player no doubt, but let's not get him confused with Vince!
Let’s not. A new contract could over value him…which is my point. Guaranteeing his contract from today to the regular season is also my point.

Agreed 100%.. he originally signed on a 2yr deal right? Then bill gave him an extension.. what is goddy complai about.. he really has no leverage.. especially when there are some guys on the roster chomping at the bit to have a starting role.

..........................................................Just guarantee the contract.

Many on this board aren’t giving Godchaux enough credit for his contributions as a run defender, in my opinion. He isn’t overpaid. He is 24th in the league in average salary among DTs, which is where he should be, if you look at the other DTs in that general salary range.

He has an important guy in his corner:

“In my opinion Davon Godchaux is one of the best run defenders — especially defensive tackles as a nose tackle — in the game,” Covington told reporters last week, following the Patriots’ 21-18 road win over the Pittsburgh Steelers.
“He does a really good job throughout the week, preparing. Really good block recognition; really good run explosion; really good block destruction; and really good job overall just making tackles. To me, he’s everything you want in a nose tackle. He’s done a really good job for our defense this year and every year he’s been here.”

I agree with those who have recommended that they offer to guarantee his 2024 salary and hope that will be enough to satisfy him. If he then plays at a high level over the first half of the season, they can then try to sign him to an extension. As far as an extension, asking for $12-13m per year for two years (tacked on to 2024) isn’t an unreasonable ask by the player, given the explosion of salaries at the DT position over the past 2-3 years in particular.

I'd rather give players like Pharms Jr. and Sam Roberts the playing time than him. He too old and not worth the money that he's probably seeking. There will be better and younger options just in FA alone, not to mention somewhere in the 2025 Draft.
If they thought that Pharms and/or Roberts were better than Watts, they wouldn’t have signed Watts as a FA. If you are referring to Godchaux, you are way off base. He is a far better player than either of those two.

Younger and more impactful as well
More impactful than DG? How so? The Pats defensive coaches feel that DG has been an impact player in the role that he has been ask to play.

Godchaux isn't a true "NT". He's undersized and has been since Bill signed him. He's played well, but hasn't out-played his contract.
He is 330 lbs. That is undersized? Also, his current DC refers to him as a NT (see my post above with quotes from Covington).

Perhaps. But I wouldn't even remotely overpay for him. And we need an serious upgrade at his position in the near future to pair with Barmore.

You think that there are a lot of serious upgrades of 330 pound NT's?

Sure, you can replace him wessentially with someone who would have a different role.

It is like replaceing a 240 linebackeer with one that weighs 220, but with more talent. Sure, you can make the upgrade, but don't make believe the role is the same.

IMO, there aren't a lot of better run-stuffing DT's in the NFL.

BTW, this analysis/opinion says almost nothing about whether we should want to "overpay" him as we did the othres.

Bill signed goddy, Bill extended goddy!!! Goddy is a good player, plays the run well, plays with great leverage. However he isn't a game changer. What people are saying is. If he chose to sit out we have other guys that can contribute. However we want goddy to get what he feels is reasonable. Personally I think he gets a bump this season and gone in off season.. please let's not get him confused with wilfork, or Ted Johnson at DT. The guy that's the real impactful player, and played at an all pro level In peppers isn't crying about being extended.

His current contract situation...
Yeah, so his average while he has been a Patriot had been roughly 10 million per. So he’s playing this season (he won’t) for 7 million and no safety net going forward if he gets hurt.

They could give him a slight bump, get him up to ten million. They could add another year if they want, that will take him through 32. The guy has been an iron man for them, never gotten hurt, never gets tired… doesn’t seem like a large gamble to me.

Wow, just wow.

You really think that Onwenu and Dugger came back at a discount?
You’re taking the two best players who got just below top tier money and ignoring the other two handfuls of their own free agents who came back on reasonable deals.

Onwenu and Duggar are worth top tier money, getting them at 90% of that was a good deal:

Agreed, wolf is known to be pretty reasonable as a GM going back to his GB time I've heard.. so I can see him giving goddy a bump... the point I was trying to make is in my opinion a more deserving player in peppers hasn't balked a bit about being extended. Goddy will get his.. I just believe he needs to be patient. Bill signed him, Bill extended him..

If there was a young stud NT sitting there on the bench I’d tell Wolf to deal him… there isn’t. The Pats have no alternative or leverage.

Goddy really has no leverage, Barmore can play all over the front, goddy is a 30 yr old D tackle, they are like RBs undervalued.. even bill didn't want to pay Vince.. and he's no where on the level of Vince. If he sits out then they have other guys that can step in.. Jennings didn't come of age until he got Time, same for all thr young DBs.. players don't get better by standing on the sidelines.. again I like him.. just isn't as high a priority over say peppers.

He could wait until some team loses a DT to injury in the preseason and suddenly he has a market.

They don’t have other guys who can step in and play well, they have mostly junk at DT behind the two starters. Trysten Hill is a reclamation project with talent who has never utilized it… he’s not an option until he proves it.

I think we'd be screwed right now with out Godchow. Our run defense is my only real concern. Not saying we wildly overpay, but you need a solid run defending technician with beef among your interior D Line. What other player on the roster brings that, especially with Guy aging out?

Again.. goddy is a nice player, however IF.. he chooses to sit out the other guys they have watts and hill will see more time.. with D lineman it's all about repetition, getting a feel for how they are being blocked.. Barmore for example gets 2 sometime 3 lineman. Vince did as well.. Godchaux sometimes gets handl with one blocker. So I hope he does get extended I'm all for players to get thier $$.. but he also needs to be realistic.. you got extended when you really didn't earn it.. like the Parker extension.... so I mean I agree with you just stating the facts.

In past instances when a guy wanted a contract like law, branch.. they were high level players for the team. Ended up elsewhere even. I guess alot will depend on what happens with other D tackles right?
