Not ideal...at least not compared to his historical peers in a GOAT coach conversation.
Every single person in that picture except Saban, Schwartz and Groh, owes their entire career to Tom Brady. They all succeeded in various positions with him, but none of them succeeded as HCs without him.

Since when do college records count in evaluating a pro coach? Saban blew chunks in the NYFL for the same reason that some of those others did. They brought the same arrogance that didn't work for Bill lately.
We aren't talking some official stat or anything

Schwartz, Groh and Crennel shouldn't count under his tree.

Groh was coaching under Parcells for 10 years to BB 1. Him and Bill were also on the same staff with Parcells.

Schwartz was a scout under Bill. He coached under Jeff Fisher in Tennessee and was his claim to fame. So he is under the Fisher tree.

Crennel and Bill were also on the same staff under Parcells. Crennel was a coach under Parcells for 15 years to Bill's 4 years.

Tuna Crap and Belichick were both part of the Ray Perkins coaching tree.

You are correct. Tuna, BB and Crennel were under Perkins. So it’s really the Perkins tree.

It’s Belichick for now no question, we have to wait for Andy to cross the finish line to have a real discussion. I think Gibbs gets overlooked. 3 chips with 3 different QBs (none in the HOF). He doesn’t have a staggering win total but his playoff record is pretty strong.

Agreed but the Chiefs owners don't even live in KC, they were a loosing franchise for years. They stumbled upon patty Mahomes and started to win. No one I can say with conviction is passing Bill with 8.. Reid isn't coaching into his 70s and Mahomes isn't playing into his 40s...
I’m not sure about Reid not passing BB eventually. The relative competition level to the Chiefs is so low the sky is the limit with them. Name the current QB/HC combos that would strike any fear into Pat and Andy. They are another rare combo like Tom/BB and Pat isn’t 30 yet.

OT question: Does anyone thing K Cousins is a near carbon copy of Alex Smith?

He's not. Bill has a total of 8. Of course 6 as a HC and 2 as DC. Taking nothing away from Reid and Mahomes but like we had on occasion they had some luck with things breaking for them. Baltimore absolutely melted in the moment AFCCG at home, bills melted as well last season divisional round game at home.

Once Mahomes gets to Montana status then we can start to talk about him catching brady. The AFC is tougher than it's ever been. Teams like Houston, Ravens, Buffalo are going to be there in the end as well. Personally I don't believe Reid is coaching into his 70s and patty M is playing into his 40s.. we went 10 years in between winning superbowls they could possibly face a drought like that too. Mahomes needs to stay healthy for them to reach us.

You can add to that BB ex Brady .......... which also belongs to the BB coaching tree ....... and that's 82-98. So BB's coaching method, and his disciples, have a combined coaching record of 299 - 414 without Brady. It's a miracle they were given that many games to keep trying despite the 40% win percentage. And the reason is that BB WITH Brady is 219-64 and everyone wanted to catching that lightning in a bottle again and BB with Brady win record of nearly 80% could never come close to being replicated no matter how many times the dice was re-rolled with new HC - QB combinations, including BB himself post Brady.

Lombardi won 5 titles in 10 years and had 0 losing seasons with any of his QBs.
Belichick won 6 titles in 30 years and had 8 losing seasons out of 10 without Brady.
I'll still take Lombardi and his .738 regular season and .900 playoff percentage.

Lombardi is fair choice. One of the few you can actually make a case for over BB.

But keep in mind a decent portion of this was pre-merger so they compare more to conference championships than Super Bowl wins.

And he never had to replace a single player due to salary cap issues.

Lombardi also died young (57). If he around for as long as Bill was who knows what he could have accomplished. The man is a cultural icon that transcends sports IMO. Much like Brady is today.

And he never had to replace a single player due to salary cap issues.
And he never got to pick up a single player from another team due to salary cap issues.
And he was playing by the same rules as every other coach, just like they do now.

It's why I always thought even though you can't compare stats across different eras, you certainly can compare wins. Those are wins against your peers in the league playing by the same rules and era of the game as you are.
