even though I have consistently been one of his harshest critics over past 5 years I will miss:

1. His mental toughness
2. His discipline
3. The gravitas he brings to the table both for his own players and other teams
4. He was feared by other teams, especially qbs
5. Players listened to him
6. He earned his head coaching shots
7. He could often come up with brilliant defensive game plans

His GM decisions obviously did him in but the swag he carried around with him will be missed

I still think Mayo is not the coach this franchise deserves. A more qualified and experienced coach should have been sought after. Vrabel deserved the shot.
Some red flags already popping up with Mayo.
When Pats are 4-13 players will tune him out quickly, his inclusive player friendly buddy buddy, back slapping approach only works for winning organizations.

Pete Carrol was a failure here b/o players friendly approach.

Mayo is Jim Tomsula 2.0. Both were very well liked by the Owner, but not known for really anything as a assistant coach. Vrabel's an arrogant prick.

Overall, Carroll's approach may have been a small portion of the with their downfall. While Bledsoe confirmed some players didn't like Carroll's "rah rah" attitude, he recently said on Edelman's podcast that their drafts from 1997-1999 were "really poor". That was a major problem. While NE was throwing draft picks down the toilet, the rest of the AFC East were landing impact players which allowed Miami, Buffalo and NYJ to catch up to NE by 1998. Indy came out of nowhere in 1999. Carroll also briefly talked about it on Edelman's podcast basically saying he got ****ed over.

Injuries also plagued them. Had Martin, Glenn and McGinest been healthy in 1997, they would've been hosting Denver for the AFCCG. They probably still end up 9-7 in 1998, but they would've made Jacksonville sweat in the Wild Card. As bad as they were in 1999, they seriously could've been 11-5 had they not blown the Miami game at home being spotted 14 points by the D against a backup QB and Adam Vinatieri blowing two game winning kicks against KC and Buffalo. And this is without Robert Edwards who would've made a difference for that pathetic excuse for their running game that season.

Bad personnel moves such as mishandling the Curtis Martin situation letting Sam Gash, Jimmy Hitchcock and Willie Clay walk and extending Todd Rucci and Max Lane.

Carroll proved at USC and Seattle that he clearly wasn't the problem in NE. The real problem was Bobby taking back control from Parcells and threw Carroll under the bus when his team went 2-4 against the HC he ran out of town (including an embarrassing loss on MNF) among the things listed above. This is why he gave the team back to BB in 2000. History is repeating itself.

Yeah I remember those Brady years BB that post Brady: BB wasn't feared he was JAG and plain HC.

1. Bill had the military mentality: try to make the right decisions, but, above all, make sure that everyone is following orders from above.

2. He would listen to others he respected (Ernie -- maybe Charlie, RAC, Josh).

3. He put his ego last and never took public credit for the triumphs.

4. He didn't play silly ra-ra games. His motivational speech was "Do what I tell you and you'll win. Don't and you'll lose."

5. He never blamed players in public and, if there was a problem in the locker room, he dealt with it privately -- ruthlessly, but privately.

6. His greatest coaching season, in my view, was 2013. Just imagine what it does to a locker room to have one of the players arrested for murder. And yet he kept the team together and playing hard so that it got to the AFCCG.

7. He was the greatest Xes-and-Os coach of all time, both in scouting and planning and in gameday adjustment.

Obviously, at some point his judgement deteriorated and his willingness to listen to others. The McDaniels-to-Patricia/Judge story is just a terrible example of someone with absolute authority whose ego got out of control.

But BB was the GOAT, no question.

What I liked about BB was his consistency in coaching and wisdom about the NFL..
Coupled with his belief that he could "coach up" mediocre players, sometimes it worked other times less so.
Also liked how he toyed with the annoying press at press conferences he believed he did not have time for. Remember when a new reporter asked him "Where do you keep your Superbowl Rings"?? BB replied, "In a box".
He never threw a player under the bus in public settings, but held every players accountable in private.
So many other reasons; his game time management skills, his work ethic, remember reading after a west coach trip and they returned to Foxboro he would spend the night reviewing films and getting ready for the next opponent.

I'll say this.

RK was a successful business man long before he bought the team wich was a laughing stock in the NFL at the time. He's made his fortune making smart decisions. So he had a legendary coach for so long he went against the advice of others to hire Bill. He was laughed at. Owners know thier franchise inside and out so we as fans becuase we feel a certain person isn't a good hire does not permeate to what Owners feel and think.

What people don't know is Bill was Mayo's biggest supporter in him being his successor. Bill knew of Mayo's contract and Bill himself asked mayo to come to coaching in 2019.

Mayo's got ringing endorsements from the entire organization so wether we feel he's the right fit or not he's our HC and I believe he is an excellent choice. You have to think of the temperature of the franchise with this current generation of players. Mayo's tied to maye so let's all root for success. We know no one can ever replace Bill or TB12.

Yeah I remember those Brady years BB that post Brady: BB wasn't feared he was JAG or HC.
Guess he forgot RK hired a multiple time ALL pro LB, team captain, a guy who's been part of the organization for 16 years...

Recently watched the movie about the US beating the Rooskies in the 1980 Olympics. The coach's style time and again reminded me of BB. Great flick. Woulda been even bettah if I understood the wacky sport of hockey.

I've missed the Great Bill Belichick for some time, not the Nixonian, post Brady Belichick that had everyone walking on eggshells. That Bill was too busy having lieutenants that carried the message instead of having quality coaches to do the job. GM Bill failed Coach Bill in so many ways.

I'll miss Bill that essentially came up with a defense that pitched a shut out in the super bowl vs the Rams. I'll miss the Bill that had his team the most prepared in the NFL week in and week out. I'll miss the Bill that coached the two greatest players on either side of the ball, who made sure that special teams made a difference. I'll 100% miss the Bill that could take some jamoke out of working a toll booth on the Mass Pike and make him a difference maker in the secondary.

I won't miss the Bill that made offense an afterthought, that spent way too much time on specials when the NFL tried to do away with special teams, and the Bill that absolutely refused to draft talent at WR.

At this point, I am happy with everyone from that era sitting back and telling the stories. Have Tirico or Rich Eisen interview the lot of them. Ready to move forward with young people and fresh minds.

What “ red flags” have “ popped up” with Maye? I’m hearing the exact opposite?

Strategically and tactically there has never been a better coach. No coach has ever been better at taking away strengths and exploiting weaknesses.

************.

Let’s see if the collaboration station wins games first, if Wolf can stock the shelves when all the best free agents he signs aren’t already here, let’s see if Mayo can manage a game and strategize.

All things end…

I will miss Bill's vast knowledge of the game. There really isn't another coach out there who has seen pretty much everything that Bill has. There really isn't too many situations that Bill would not have seen before during a game.

I will also miss his defensive game planning ability. The way Bill was able to either take away the other team's best option or let that best option get his numbers while taking away the rest of their offense. It was pretty rare when they would let one guy beat us pretty much singlehanded.

His attention to detail is another big loss. The situations and scenarios he would have the team practice like the Malcom Butler play. In the 3 Games to Glory doc they have practice footage of the exact play the Seahawks ran and how Butler got beat on it. Butler talked about recognizing that play from practice and having to fight through the traffic to make a play on the ball and that preparation won them a Super Bowl.
