One of my favorite Patriots over the last few years. His pass protection dipped a bit last year but the line was a mess overall so who knows if that was a physical decline or him helping/adjusting to guys rotating on both sides of him. Either way I like the signing. Veteran leadership who can help Maye with protection calls and be a locker room guy.

While I am not generally in favor of resigning a ton of players from a 4-13 team, this deal is for minimal dollars and Andrews has been a team captain for many years.

The deal works well all around.

We've talked about it before, but this team owes me exactly nothing. Never thought we'd see six Lombardis and what, 9 trips to the SB. 11 overall? Unfathomable.
Oh wholeheartedly agree. We've bared witness to something never to be replicated in sports again. We as fans are so accustomed to that. We know what Winning football is and we yearn that again around these parts. Have to crawl before we can walk. So I'm willing to be patient and watch Drake develop into an all pro level player wich I believe he will become.

We have to see the actual contract but this deal, while it looks like it runs through 2025, actually just guarantees him money for this year. It provides a longtime captain and starter with security entering this training camp.

Whether he plans on retiring next year or even if he decides after training camp to retire this season... this amounts to a one year deal. No player wants to be playing with no security blanket, it would be disrespectful to ask Andrews to play with no net after his long distinguished career.

lots more to come

My list
Godchaux
Wise
Judon
Jon Jones
Peppers

I don't like the deal. even for 1 year, puts Andrews at $8m plus incentives apy. simply too much for his production.
he was under contract anyways, where was he going?
has been on the retirement fence. J Andrews was drafted. Strange will either end up at OC or will be cut.

He was supposed to play with zero guaranteed money in his final season and swing on the trapeze with no net... sounds like a great thing to do to a team captain and a great message to send to your locker room after an off-season you were voted the cheapest franchise in the NFL.

This ^ is just an outright silly statement.

the Pats could have guaranteed this year. they could have added some incentives. they did so with Trent Brown. they did so with Guy last year.

we did last year (Jake Andrews). signed Charles Turner udfa from LSU this year as well

I understand we drafted J Andrews. Is he a lock to start at center or is he backup G/C?

after signing David Andrews is Jake going to be cut?

Not sure cutting backups are a good idea. We need them in case the starters go down. Also the backups may become starters at some point.

I like it a lot. Even if it turns out to be a bit over an overpay, good leader to have around.

Really feels like they think Mac and Bill were the problem and not the roster.

Much love for Andrews ... great captain and stand-up guy.
Excellent at calling out protections as he surveys the defense.
I like how Wolfe is securing leaders for the units ... he is certainly this.

That being said we got hammered up the middle last year ....
Our QB's had one of the league's worst times to get rid of the ball.
2nd worst at 2.46 seconds .... is what it is.

I'm going to copy/paste a response by another great poster who already responded to you and provide the link:

"You forget that the pats were around 50 million under the cap before this deal. As of 2021 the cba required teams to be at 90% of the cap as a team minimum and the pats aren’t even close to that, meaning they need to spend or put in bogus extensions with guaranteed money that equals this years cap number to inflate the cap hits and prevent balogna bob from shelling out actual cash. This contract helps with that. Andrews already had a cap number of 8.45 million before this new deal. His new has 8 million in guarantees and still adds the original cap hit to the new deal if they push the guarantees to this year. This allows them to still pay andrews essentially the same amount as his old contract called for this year and work creative accounting to increase the cap hit without actually spending a penny more than he was originally getting. It’s a balogna bob special to try and push the team closer to the cba minimum and still not spend a dime more. I fully expect more “extensions” in the near future to get to the required 90%." - SquishTheFish

Again.... going cheap on a career Patriot, team captain in an offseason you were voted stingiest franchise in the NFL is a bad look. Moreover it's detrimental to your entire team.
