DRAFT 2024 4th Round Pick - G Layden Robinson

Not open for further replies.
LT (to be determined)-Sow-Strange-Onwenu-Caedan Wallace

That may work well. Good running on that right side. Chuks Okorafor certainly has nfl talent and looks the part. Holding out hope he can excel as LT. He may be motivated to do well there.

With Joe Milton as QB does it really matter? Defenders will bounce off him like he’s a Marvel superhero.

Fun and interesting times back at Foxboro?

This is terrible, adding offensive linemen, a potential franchise quarterback, and multiple WR’s is insane. The defense is awful and full of holes and these guys are going for offense in the Draft. WTF Elliott? WTF Jerod? We already have a young franchise quarterback in Bailey Zappe, a loaded WR unit, and the best offensive line in football and you guys are ****ing around adding players on offense?

Kraft gets rid of the man everyone here agreed was better at drafting and free agency than any coach in the league, and replaces him with these clowns? WYF Bob. WTF Jonathan?

This sucks, I cant stand it anymore!!!

I’m taking our names off of the waiting list for Patriots season tickets that we got on in 1991.

Might want to look out after suggesting that OL. I got blasted in another thread for suggesting this exact OL combination. Just giving you a heads up

ESPN's Miller: "Very competitive, has football character as well, 2nd straight OL the Pats have taken where the mind is as good as the physical traits."

People are complaining because the “ draft analysts” had others rated higher, but between them Wallace allowed 4 sacks last year, against top competition, and Robinson allowed 1. And both have exactly the attitude and demeanor you want in your OL. I won’t be surprised if both end up as starters.

I think Mafi is definitely an endangered specie. Sow has to have a second year jump in pass blocking. Strange may be an injury concern. We complained a lot about tackles last year but at the end of the year the interior was a concern.

Maybe give Mafi a shot as a two gap NT before waiving him.

Mayo made a comment about this pick which seemed telling. A reporter asked why they drafted a guard highly when they seem to have already invested a number of picks in recent years in guys who are playing guard, it doesn’t seem like a need.

Mayo responded that several of those players who were drafted previously and are playing guard now have positional flexibility and could move to another position which would create a need at guard.

IMO this could mean:
- Strange at center or tackle
- Mafi at center
- Sow at tackle
- Onwenu back to guard if another player takes over at right tackle

A lot of moving parts there. Will have to see what permutations they try in camp.
Also makes for a competitive group guys competing for spots that's how Teams become good.

A lot of scouts are saying he takes plays off, but I really am not judging him on whether he's a reach or not. I'm judging this pick based on whether we should have gone for this position at the 100th pick of the draft.

The mantra around here is that this team has holes everywhere and we ended up picking a guy to be a backup behind Onwenu, Sow and Strange, especially when we already had 2 backups in Mafi and Andrews.

Somehow I feel this pick is going to be a waste like the 2 3rd rounders we burned on tight ends in 2020 draft.

I like this guy. Almost all of his problems can be corrected by a good OL coach and a lot of practice reps. Plus, he looks like a damn steer.

Even when Strange was healthy he wasn't very good.
Not entirely true. He had below average pass blocking grades, but his run blocking grades have been amongst the best in the league in terms of OGs.

You can’t really judge his performance either way last year. Not only was he limited in terms of snaps, but he wasn’t healthy even when he did play. In one of his podcast episodes, I remember Curran stating that he was trying to gut it out and was essentially playing on one good leg.

That happens to a lot of Guards including First Rounder Strange Cole what's your point??
I understand, but I was reacting to the posts about his sack and pressure rates. Those were microscopic, but in that drill he gets easily overpowered one out of two times, which aligns with his physical traits. The implication is that in the NFL, he will get beat or overpowered a lot. I know that's a lot to infer from such a small sample size, but in the context of the rates mentioned above, it's worth pointing out. Cole Strange is an average guard, right?

You can say I'm jumping to a conclusion from a tiny sample size, and you are correct. But his physical traits indicate to me that he'll have issues in the NFL.

Point taken He'll have time to get Stronger Siddy Sow is ahead of him.

Patriots restock the OL with big athletic guard Layden Robinson from Texas A&M.
6'3 1/2" 302 lbs with long 34 5/8" arms.

Scouting report:

6’3-1/2” & 305 is not that “big” by NFL OL standards.

They had all ****ing night to think about this pick… EXACT same start to Day 3 as the previous, justifiably ****-canned grocery-shopper had last year…

Meet the New boss; same as the Old boss.

And riddle me this, BluntMan: On Friday, Wolfie chose someone who NEVER played Left Tackle in college… On Saturday, with his Very First Pick that day, he chose someone who, if he even makes the 53, will more likely than not have to be a Right Guard Only in the NFL… Meanwhile, during the offseason, the club re-signed Mike Onwenu to a big extension to play RIGHT TACKLE AND RIGHT GUARD for them…

Exactly Whatthe**** am I missing here?

Calm down chief. He's not a 350 lbs road grader by any means. But 34 5'8" arms is freakishly long for an OL.

If anything this guy might be a Cole Strange replacement. You know, the Cole Strange who can't stay healthy?

AVP offense is based on West Coast/Outside Zone so it looks like they want a guard who can pull and get out to the second level.

Just think a bit before spouting off.

Here's a good primer article detailing what to expect from an AVP offense: Film Review: How Will the Patriots Offense Look Under New Offensive Coordinator Alex Van Pelt?

Here's a starter from that article to think about:
"McVay and others from the West Coast/outside zone family had to adjust to stay relevant. The answer was to call more gap schemes and add blockers to flip the formation's strength on the fly with motion. For Cleveland, they became a gap-based run scheme. Over the last two seasons, the Browns lead the league in how often they use man-blocking and heavily feature schemes with pulling linemen.

Although they don't major in motion like the Shanahan tree, Cleveland uses pullers and tight ends blocking across the formation to get hat-on-hat to the play side. The Browns do this with a league-high rate in six-plus offensive linemen usage (10.8%), playing 24.3% of their snaps with two-plus tight ends, and leading the NFL in I-formation plays. Cleveland still ranked second in the percentage of runs to the outside (64.1%), marrying those outside runs to play-action passes.

At its core, the Browns offensive system is all about generating explosive plays with their run game setting up play-action."

One of them could also be moving to the middle

As in, to Center? When None of those 3 have Ever played it?

More "conversion" hopes & prayers by this over-their-collective-head Front Orifice.

Sounds like a bunch of ******** trying to justify a ****ing Terrible ****ing pick.
