Drake Maye would be the IDEAL pick for the Patriots at #3

And that's why if we Draft him it's imperative that we surround him with a very Good OL and not a sieve.
Maye is young enough to sit for a year or two (like Aaron Rogers/Jordan Love etc.) while the talent on the offense is built up, and the QB Coach can work with him. Maye had a horrible OL and only one decent receiver, while Daniels had a solid OL and outstanding WR Corps. And yet Maye still put up solid numbers despite not having the talent on offense that Williams/Daniels/Penix had.

These charts can be fools gold sometimes. Maye had more attempts at almost every down and distance and his best wr was a day 3 pick in Dez Walker. North Carolina had a new offensive line coach in both 2022 and 2023 so I question the continuity and talent up front. Players got to make plays but 57 attempts at the 11-15 range is a high number to skew the results. I think if he was probably throwing to Nabers or Brian Thomas the completion percentage would be a tad higher? Franklin or Odunze? All guys that are elite at their position and create separation with ease. Or maybe had the most respected run game in the country like Michigan? Team around you definitely equates to college success. Look at Williams in 22 when he had Addison and looked otherworldly vs 23. USC had a lot of problems this year.

I’m sure you can find examples of QB’s like him that did more with less, but as a coach or gm I’m looking at what the team, staff and scouts have to do to give him the coaching, scheme and players to make him successful. From all accounts he’s an A+ person and teammate. Has an NFL arm and plus plus scrambling ability. I think they can work with that.

Edited for Daniels and Williams mix up.
I agree. Maye did not have anywhere near the supporting cast on offense that Williams/Daniels/Penix had.

Not knowing what Washington will do, what would it take for the Patriots to move up to #2. To potentially ensure their guy isn't taken?

If they don't see a huge difference between Maye/Daniels, it's obviously not worth it. I've seen Maye consistently compared to Herbert. And...Daniels to Jackson. In a vacuum, I'd take Herbert over Jackson.

Kingsbury is a Maye guy…and that’s that.

What would it take to trade up?

“NO!!!”

If the Pats’ guy is not there then trade down and gather other assets, take a shot at the next tier of QB later.

I think it's hilarious that guys who have spent three years whining about Mac Jones crappy mechanics want the Pats to focus on a guy whose mechanics are worse than Mac Jones.

And in 2028 when they have not found their guy?

I think it's all moot. Patriots are unlikely to pass up either guy at number three.

Patriots can't afford to not get their guy in the top three. Not in this conference.

Or stuff about trading down for other assets/positions.

You could have the 90's Cowboys OL. It won't matter if you don't have the guy behind center. Football has changed dramatically in the past few decades.

Everyone always mentions later round QB's who hit. The list of those QB's who failed in the late rounds is much larger.

I've seem half mock drafts with the NEP taking Daniels at three. Other half has them taking Maye. Which tells me there isn't much separating these guys.

You go way back Gr8est I became a fan during the Eason years but liked Grogan much better.
I saw Grogan in the corridor of the Hilltop the day after he was removed as the starter. He was one very impressive looking young man and he was clearly angry. He was so angry I didn't say anything to him.

Mock drafts are meaningless. Even the men being paid to pick the players make plenty of mistakes. It's a crap shoot but I'm sure we can find one mock that was close after the draft. Everyone and his brother does one.

I think the reason why most prefer Maye all have to do with his prototypical size If Daniels was built like CJ. Stroud there would be no comparison.

Jayden Daniels is 6’3 210

CJ Stroud is 6’3 214

If they were standing together you would have no idea which one was which.

Of course the late round picks fail more, at every position and not just QB. But a higher pick doesn't guarantee anything. Here's a list of HOF QBs (plus Brady) & the number of non-HOF QBs that were drafted before them.

Starr-8
Brady-6
Blanda-8
Unitas-3
Montana-3
Fouts-5
Stabler-3
Jurgensen-4
Van Brocklin-5
Marino-3
Favre-2
Roethlisberger-2
There are also 8 more who were drafted behind 1 other QB.

That's a ****load of misses from people who are paid to make those choices.

And this is the list of all of the #1 picks that aren't in the HOF yet. Only a few have any chance to get there.

2021TevorLawrence
2020JoeBurrow
2019KylerMurray

Like I keep saying, it's a crap shoot and a top pick is no sure thing.

That reminds me of a picture on the cover of Reader's Digest before the 2004 SB of Brady standing next to McNabb. I was shocked at how much taller Brady was. Brady could have eaten peanuts off the top of McNabb's head if they would have stayed there.

JD refused to be measured at the Combine, so the jury's still out on his actual measurements. I guess we'll all find out in LSU's Pro Day on 3/27.
