Well, to be fair, what's happening with the Patriots is how the military and good businesses run... you work up the ranks and get promoted when the top positions term out.
So, Mayo bumps up to HC. Then either Steve or Covington get bumped up to DC. That works - especially if that unit has been working well. Where it may need a deeper infusion of new blood is on offense.
I imagine whichever of Steve or Covington don't get DC, would likely move on.

The whole lack of bringing in or announcing that they're bringing in the top candidates that are out that there that have the potential to be stud OC's concerns me greatly. It's a "Snooze You Loose" possibility, as other teams are going to be jumping on those top candidates.

Patriots to interview an in-house candidate for DC, DeMarcus Covington

Very interesting... Have to wonder if this is an indication Steve Belichick will follow his father to Atlanta

It's been speculated as being a possibility since BB left. Although Steve would be better off making a name for himself away from being under his Dad.

So, to be clear, are the 2 DC interviews required before they could name Stevie B the DC?
not saying they are just checking boxes, but even though Steve is the incumbent, he wasn't listed as DC, so it'd still have to go through Rooney to promote from within for a coordinator?

Yes

Patriots are about to have the most inexperienced coaching staff in the NFL by a mile.
Mayo should focus on developing himself as a coach first and not worry about developing his bevy of young inexperienced colleagues

I think they are being very deliberate on the offensive side of the ball, hence the lack of news.

Lot of moving pieces that are not in play on defense because I'd wager Mayo has a good handle on that. Not so much on the offense. And just because we haven't heard anything yet, it does not mean that they have not reached out to different candidates.

Today on zolak and Bertrand it was mentioned that nick caley who was here would be under consideration. Feels like we are starting an expansion team we need so much or am I just overreacting?

The thing is. Mayo is going to learn as he goes. He'll have people around him he can trust and be trusted to coach up the players. I'm not worried at all on defense becuase honestly I believe it's going to be covington. Offensively is where I'm curious...

It does feel like that. You're not overreacting. And, Caley would not be anywhere near the Top 10 that I would even consider for OC. I have a very bad feeling about the direction of this team (or lack of direction if you like).

I most certainly hope that you're right. I just don't have a good feeling at the present time, especially regarding the Offense.

I wish Steve B would get the DC job but maybe he foes not want to work under Mayo when they were at same level before Mayo got job.
I agree that it feels like an expansion team.
No way Josh comes back to work under Mayo when he could work for his mentor BB

I hope that we are both just overreacting right? This is all tied to getting the QB, I like my coach and believe in mayo, but we need the talent offensively. We are good in one area that's defense. We need the talent here. But you are right.

Read they’re interviewing Covington for the DC position, nice.

I’m concerned he won’t have people around him he can trust. One of his biggest weaknesses as a HC candidate is he doesn’t have coaches he has a working relationship with that he can hire. A couple might stay but the vast majority of the staff are going to be people he doesn’t know and hasn’t built a relationship with by working together. There won’t be any trust in the bank.

I really hope they don’t go outside and bring in a DC who has never worked in the only system Mayo has ever known.
It’s almost certain that will happen on offense, and likely special teams.

We could have a hc with no experience in any of the schemes his team is running.
