Jeremy Fowler said the Patriots won't try to resign Onwenu

If they just let him walk and didn’t trade him at the deadline, it’s the same-old same-old formula that’s now failing.

Onwenu is the top OL on the market and the Pats OL is missing two tackles, with an aging center.

Are they going with Draft-Strange-Andrews(1or2)-Mafi-Sow?

Sign him. He’s rarely hurt, is versatile. and is very, very good. They’re flush with cash. This really isn’t rocket science.

Playing cheap here puts the Pats in mediocrity- in the good years.

They can afford market value for one of only a few offensive players who are worth it.

Here we go.... Losing the little talent we have. I'd transition him for one year to help mayo. I'd franchise hunter Henry. They're one yr deals

Transition tag for Onwenu is 19.7 million. Franchise tag for Henry is 12.3. Now you've got 38 million in cap room for FAs and other re-signings.

Onwenu is barely capable at RT. Walk on Mike. Greener pastures await you.

Who you going to bring in that's better... Buys you one year to draft a couple tackles to replace owenu after a yr or so you want two rookies? Same with tightend

Fact is you'll overpay for free agents to come. Once Henry and owenu are gone you have the space back

We did this dance 3 yrs ago with a spending frenzy

Why over-pay for anyone now? We ain't going nowhere for a few years. Be smart about the rebuild, take our time. I like Mike, but like others have said, a guard playing tackle isn't worth tackle money.

I completely agree with this. The only issue is, we're going to have to pay *somebody* to get to the salary floor, which is 200 million. 33 million to spend, and like the old Wheel of Fortune, we're going to have to get a couple of those porcelain dalmations.

Draft. Like I said in another thread; draft four tackles if you have to.
We've needed top talent there for years (since Wynn's Achilles) and have neglected it. Brown was a mirage.

I can’t believe they won’t franchise tag him if they can’t resign him. It’s going to be hard enough to replace the left tackle let alone both.
Think they said it's well over $20 million to tag him. That's way too much, no way.

Not paying Onwenu is business as usual for the Patriots.

I hope Mayo and whoever the front office ends up bring prioritize paying their good players at top of the market rate.

Bill spent a long time succeeding by targeting the middle class. That strategy hasn’t been successful in recent years and I hope the new leadership changes up that strategy.

But remember it was Bill who didn't want to sign top players and Kraft was always willing to spend remember, that's what we were told for years.

Imagine how stupid Kraft will look if he's frugal with the big contracts and Bill is in Atlanta spending like a mad man.
Even though I'm a Belichick supporter, I really think it was Bill's strategic plan to keep the money for a strong middle class. One of the things I loved about his approach is that he would always reward people who played over and above their contract that year by giving them a few million more at the back end. This allowed the team to spend up to the cap at the end of the year and to provide incentive for players.

I think Kraft will spend this year just to make sure the optics don't make him out to be the cheap one.

It's not a matter of neglect as much as it is a premium position. 6 tackles went before we picked in the first round in 2022. A lot of the later tackles busted. I just looked at it a few weeks ago. if you were lucky enough to land Abe Lucas or Braxton jones, you made out like a bandit. But so many guys ended up busting. I mean, Vederian Lowe is just an example of one of the tackles who went later in that draft.

After a little searching around Onwenu's contract is expected to be about 14.5 million per year for 4 years. That seems like a pretty good deal especally if you plan it to have an escape clause near the end. seems to me that 14.5 for a very flexiable like him is great

You're right. It's too easy to toss their efforts to pursue a tackle aside. Some of it was just misfortune.

Welp. Bill's gone but the mind numbing personel decisions continue.
Pats going with a guard at #3?

Yep, and I'm sure the team that signs him to that deal will be very happy with it.

They could have also taken Broderick Jones over Gonzalez (Jones played very well this week against the Bills). But -- me no like that alternative.
