Rap: Mayo is the new HC

It's almost like BOB had to deal with

1. Them letting the best WR on the team go.
2. A lack of depth at RB after Harris left.
3. Bill mandating that they switch OL philosophies midway through
4. BOB not being allowed to bring on his staff.
5. Bill deciding to replace Meyers with Juju and it flopping.

Nobody serious thinks Patricia was a good OC or even better. He just didn't have a total disaster to deal with, only a partial one.
BOB had to deal with the worst offensive line of the Bill Belichick era. BOB had the extraordinary benefit of working with Dante Scarnecchia in his first go-round.

Hoping for the best. It's scary to choose someone who's never held a position with any accountability. The pseudo DC who gets credit for the good the defense does, while the blame gets shifted to Steve for the bad. The pseudo assistant HC during the team's downfall with responsibilities so ambiguous he emerges blameless... And now he'll be the rookie HC who "inherited BB's mess," so there'll be at least 2 more years of zero accountability.

The only thing we can see with him (as outsiders) is he's open and thoughtful when interviewed.

There are coordinators out there proving their worth in ways we can see and measure.
I mean...

I don't really want O'Brien as OC. I don't know who else is out there who might be a better option but I can't help but attach the stink of this previous season to him, to some degree.
He's a BB lemming letting D-Hop leave the building did it for me. I hope he goes back to the College game I would welcome Josh back.

Mayo's introductory press conference is not for 5 days - Wednesday January 17th at noon. They may have a GM hired too by then.

Agree. How do first time coaches do? I’d have to check their records. I’m guessing they are as good as rookie qbs winning super bowls.
Most HOF coaches.

-Paul Brown's first team was the Browns
-Vince Lombardi's first pro HC job was the Packers
-Tom Landry got his HC start on the Cowboys
-Chuck Noll on the Steelers
-Joe Gibbs on the Redskins
-Shula didn't have his most famous run on the Colts but he brought them to a Super Bowl.
-Parcells first HC was the Giants run.
-Cowher on the Steelers.
-Jimmy Johnson's first HC was the Cowboys
-Bill Walsh on the 49'ers.

If you want current examples. McVay's first HC job is his current one and he won a Super Bowl.

Of the current playoff teams.

-Ravens: John Harbaughs first HC job
-Bills: McDermott's first HC job
-Texans: Ryans first HC job
-Browns: Stefanski's first HC job
-Dolphins: McDaniel's first HC job
-Steelers: Tomlins first and only HC job
-49'ers: Shanahans first HC job
-Lions: Campbells first HC job (aside from an interim run)
-Eagles: Sirianni's first HC job
-Rams" Mcvay's first job as mentioned above
-Lafluer's first HC job.

Only 3 of the 14 playoff teams don't have a coach in their first HC station. The Chiefs (Andy Reid), the Cowboys (McCarthy), the Bucanners (Bowles). One of them won a Super Bowl with their first team (McCarthy) and the other made his name and went to a Super Bowl with his first team (Reid).

I’m willing to give Mayo and even the in-house front office people a shot being out from BBs shadow. He controlled everything. Let’s see what they can do with a fresh, new start. Just my opinion.

Interesting bit - Mayo is now the youngest head coach in the NFL, younger than Sean McVay by 1 month.

After Carroll's position change, the Pats had the oldest coach in the NFL with Belichick until yesterday. So they went from oldest to youngest, lol.

How are you going to post your first post and follow up with the worst analysis of Zappe vs Jones this year I've ever read? Zappe outplayed Jones in every single metric.
He outplayed him in every metric.... Except stats and wins.

FTR: dude I wanted BB nowhere near our 2024 Draft Class he's screwed up enough of our Draft classes.

I reluctantly agree. Bill’s disdain for high picks and the silver spoon they come with really made the timing palatable.

This is an undeniable fact.

Edit: It's certainly not good enough, but if he hits 5, it's better than 4.
5 would be a disappointment considering we’re really only in need of rebuilding the offense, have close to 100 mil in cap space to fix plus the highest draft pick since Bledsoe.

I mean, we're also going to run it back with Mac Jones and Bill O'Brien so...temper those expectations. That's a lot of cap to roll over to next year.

Wait. Why the F are we running it back with Mac? When did this happen?

Phew that was close.

We need to rebuild offense and special teams and you could argue with that cap space we are still debating whether to pay

1. Our best lineman in Onwenu
2. Our best pass catcher in Henry
3. Our best RB in Elliot.

And if we don't pay any of them we have to replace them with somebody good because those units could flatline worse than they already are. Our line really can't sustain losing another good piece. Henry was a safety net for every QB that played. We have zero depth at running back if we lose Elliot, especially with Stevenson coming off injury.

It's not quite as simple as "just go all in on offense and we are fine". He have important pieces that need to be resigned or replaced before we even talk about using the leftover cap to get somebody. Our first draft pick will also likely go to replace a QB.

I think BOB is very overrated and over appreciated as an OC here, and it sounds like BB knew that with the news he was forced to bring him in. BOB was only our OC for 1 season and called plays for 2 seasons, two of which many playcalls could simply be "Gronk up the seam"

Just, file this away - and I'm basing this on Kraft making Belichick keep Jones on the roster for 2023. They're going to spend to the cap floor - roll over the rest, take a WR at 3, Harrison or Odunze, whomever's there, bring in Case Keenum or the equivalent, Laviska Shenault or the equivalent, draft Shadur Sanders in the 3rd or 4th round, declare it an 'Open Competition' in camp, with Mac not-surprisingly winning. If he manages to win 4 games before the bye, they'll pick up his option.

Come on now - there was also 'Welker on the choice route'.

That's.... not how this works bro. You have to pick up the option before camp.

Arthur Smith might be an interesting OC hire, if BoB leaves.
Need some assistants with HC experience for Mayo to lean on
