Looking Ahead: A timetable of next steps

I think they will choose between Groh and Wolf, because other team’s will come after them if they don’t name one GM. And Jason Licht could be in the mix as well.

Just listening to Barth/Lazar on Catch 22 and they made a fantastically interesting point. BB made pretty much EVERY football decision. BB is now gone. As such there is a complete vacuum on the football side when it comes to making decisions. At such a crucial time of the year we can't afford to have that vacuum in place. As such you have to think decisions will be made soon.

What could possibly go wrong?

Everything is falling in place to squander our highest draft pick in decades. But on the bright side we'll be picking high for years.

Let's see where we are one week from now with our search(es) before we feel left alone at the altar... I'll be surprised if either a new HC or new GM is hired before Tuesday; so ownership has this weekend to start getting its **** together...

They need to go scorched earth on this entire staff. Start from zero. Remove any an all traces of Bill. It is over so let it be over and no half assing it. None of these coaches and scouts are worth a damn.

If Groh, Wolf, or either are staying they can start making these decisions right now. I don’t believe there will be a GM search, one of them will get the job. Although there is little to go on I am leaning towards Wolf. The Kraft’s have known this decision was coming so I’m pretty sure they are ready to make this call.

I was asking you a genuine question. What is your concern. In regards to your now what, well I believe once a new head coach is hired BoB will be gone. That is if he doesn’t find a job somewhere else first.

I’m fine with any route out of town for O’Brien. He sucks.

Read something somewhere that Scott Pioli might be a GM candidate.. familiarity with the Krafts may be helpful.

If Belichick does go to Atlanta I could see Pioli going with him.

The only possible exception to the Rooney rule is if a coach has a contract clause automatically promoting them in the case of a vacancy. [I say possible b/c this may have been rescinded.]

By all accounts, Mayo was not given such a clause; if he were, he'd be the HC right now. Therefore, the Patriots must interview two external candidates.

I think the Rooney Rule still applies if we want to hire Mayo.

Mayo does have the promotion clause in his contract. As a result the team can avoid the Rooney Rule requirements if he is actually hired as the Head Coach.

This is 100% correct. Pape is always on the money. This was confirmed by Curran and Callahan the paperwork for such was already filed with the NFL.

I just wish people would take a chill pill and relax. Mayo is the guy so let's support him and have some hopes he will do well!

One of the amazing things about the NFL is that you see people like the OC at Houston Slowik talked up as an up and comer. Why? Because of one year of success. This is such a short sample. Look at some of these schedules around the league, check out Atlanta's schedule for instance:

They played 2 playoff teams outside their division: Atlanta Falcons 2023 Regular Season NFL Schedule - ESPN

Detroit and Green Bay. That's it. Tampa is the team within their division.

It's an incredibly weak schedule.

So I took a look at Houston: Houston Texans 2023 Postseason NFL Schedule - ESPN

They have as many games against playoff teams as Atlanta!! Only Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Tampa and Cleveland.

You can really rack up a good record against a weak schedule.

By the law of averages you should be playing 7 of your 17 games against playoff teams. Some teams have a 3 game bump just from scheduling.

Who isn't supporting him?

I think people are looking around, as we should, to see what the structure is.

The easiest thing in the world for management is to make coaches their sacrificial lamb.

Most of the NFL has a structure that places all the blame on the coach, and that's what the coaches are paid for, but very few have a structure that consistently wins.

In every case where a team wins consistently over years, the coaches have enormous power (KC, SF, LAR, BUF, BALT, PITT). Dallas and Philadelphia are the only 2 outliers. And Philly hasnt been winning for more than 2 years anyway. Denver is the only team with a strong HC who hasn't won, but he just got there.
