How do we know for sure that RKK and Bill aren't on the same page with Mac? How do we know that RKK didn't sign off on all of this? Ship out the mutineers, leave Mac hung out to dry, all while playing nice with the media (talking about RKK, obviously), with the plan to move on from him at the end of his rookie deal. Mac's lack of performance just speeds this up.You're not alone. There's a lot of people that believe that. Thing is why?
1. Is it to finally be able to unload Mac over RK's objections?
Yes. They can either draft another QB, in which case the position is still under the rookie contract for another 4-5 years, or they can go get a vet and draft Harrison if available. I don't think they (RKK and Bill) want to pay a Mahomes level contract, and tie up 15% of the cap in one player. I think if they can sign a vet to a reasonable deal they will, but those rookie contracts are dammed enticing.2. To get a better draft position? That's very doubtful in my mind.
Unless of course that RKK and Bill are on the same page. They were just a short few months ago when Bill signed the extension.3. Regardless, there's a huge risk over everyone asking for his head. Unless, he's confident his contract makes it extremely painful for RK to unload him.
I think you might be looking at RKK like this magnanimous old grandpa, albeit a horny one, as opposed to the ruthless businessman needed to be to be successful in the NFL in the 21st century. I think RKK has cultivated this image thru philanthropy and going from a semi-drunk fan to a dottering old man. He's neither. He's a ruthless killer who will do what it takes to win in business. He has Bill to be the bad guy face to the media, all while playing nice and kissing schmucks like Goodell in the ear.I don't think he's tanking. I think he's lost it and what we're witnessing is the end of his career, even if he stays. Item 1 still intrigues me. I honestly don't believe Bill liked Mac but RK for whatever reason protected him. Maybe Mac gave him a handy.
.
From all reports, Bill is still Bill, so players are either protecting him or he's still on top of his game. What's more likely, he's suddenly lost the ability to coach up mid level players, or he recognizes that Mac is not leading them to the promised land and seizes the opportunity to move up in the draft to get a better shot at a top talent? I think the brain drain is a real thing when it comes to his staff, but I cannot wrap my head around the fact that they are trying to win and look as bad as they did. I also think it's convenient that they won Thursday and did not damage their chances at the second pick.
I don't take anything at face value when it comes to the NFL. I think it's horribly corrupt, and I think that everyone and his brother in the NFL
knows who's going to be the first pick. They can't leak it, because there's an industry that's out there on the NFL draft that's worth a chunk of change, so everyone plays along. Then we will have another Draft-stock scene with fans looking like they are attending a giant rock concert, to watch suits walk across a stage and say "with the upteenth pick of the 2024 NFL draft, your favorite team selects THIS GUY from State U."
Yeah, I think it's all theater. Players still play, but if the NFL can manipulate it, they will.
