Thing is we don't know if it was a Hoyer wink wink cut sign back up be put back on roster arrangement - had to be since it sounds like Zap had offers from 7 other teams to sign with their PS. Sadly, imho, BB did set Zappe up for failure probably on purpose in that Week 3 preseason game to make him look really bad to dissuade others from an outright claim (1st string OL vs 4th string OL, WR8 as best receiver, etc).There were and still are serviceable back ups on the street. No one who would knock your socks off, but better than Zappe or Grier. Nick Foles is still available. Carson Wentz was available until last week. There are others.
The second that Belichick lost faith in Zappe and deemed him cutable, he should have reached out to one of the seasoned veterans even if he had faith in Mac at that point. You cannot go into the season with no back up QB you trust.
