Because no one demanded it, here's my theory of why Aaron Rodgers' time in New York will be disappointing. We all know it's because the Jets suck in perpetuity and everything that comes into their orbit is equally contaminated, but I'm trying to flesh it out a little more.
Rodgers is first ballot hall of famer and I'm sure that, this month, the talking heads will swoon over him throwing a 50 yard TD off his back foot, over his shoulder while falling out of bounds. The guy is an undeniable talent and he's going to make some impressive throws. The problem is going to be that eventually, maybe sooner than later, the Jets are going to face adversity. Injuries, tough opponents, bad calls, bad luck, bad weather, whatever. It's going to happen. The difference is that, for the first time, Rodgers is not in Green Bay. I cannot cite specific examples of this, but it's reasonable to assume that when he was a member of the Packers and things looked tough, someone (teammate, coach, friend, family member, agent, member of the front office or maybe even Rodgers himself) said something along the lines of: "This is the Green Bay Packers. This is the team that picked you when you were falling the draft, that showed patience with you while you sat behind Favre. Think of the names, the history...Lombardi, the Frozen Tundra, Titletown, the Ice Bowl, the Lambeau Leap, the cheeseheads, all those great coaches and players. You can't let that legacy down." Part of the message was, as great as Rodgers was/is, he was part of something much bigger.
When he's faced with a similar situation with the Jets, his home for 5 months, what's Rodgers going to do? Go all out and do whatever it takes to win? Or consider that his place in history is secure, he has no connection to this team beyond a paycheck and de facto GM powers, and that he's not taking any unnecessary risks or doing more than what's expected of a starting QB?
