Player Signing New Pats OT Tyrone Wheatley Jr

I like this trade . He might be raw but we need an swing tackle as all ours are banged up - reiff, McDermott and Anderson. Steuber showed enough that he shouldn't be awarded even an additional snap in NFL.

With OT in so much short supply we have no other option to pick the best of the cut candidates and OT being such an important position , you dont what to play waiver lottery.

We lost wynn and the new signed veteran free agents are also injured. It can't get worse than this. So we need to get some insurance for 4 weeks and I like Wheatley as a depth piece.

Ty Monty looks great in shorts and on paper is a versatile piece to employ on third down. I’ve always been high on him.

But in today’s projected 53 by Lazar at patriots.com he doesn’t have him making the team. Can’t stay healthy.

I think a good case can be made that Taylor is ahead of Harris with Zeke and Mondre 2 and 1 on the depth chart. Nice change of pace back with balance and elusiveness. Great on screens like in the last preseason game, for example.
People have been saying the say thing about Taylor since he came here in 2020. He had 10 carries in 2 games in 2020 that inflated his YPC for that year. In the 29 carries he's had since then (21&22), he's totaled 46 yards.

We've been waiting for years for him to produce. I just don't see it happening.

“Having already missed on Cardinals swing tackle Josh Jones (traded Thursday to Houston), the Pats should call about Browns swing tackle James Hudson III. The former fourth-round pick has drawn rave reviews in his third season, but if Cleveland says no, they settle for Wheatley. Hudson and Wheatley have impressed in the preseason and been schooled by the league’s best O-line coach in Bill Callahan. Capable offensive tackles are like pitching in baseball: even the best teams can’t have enough.”

“Except if you're facing a serious numbers crunch. In Cleveland, Wheatley is stuck behind starters Jedrick Willis, Jack Conklin, fourth-round rookie Dawand Jones and Hudson. Through two preseason games, he's played 61 snaps at left tackle and 37 at right tackle, per Pro Football Focus. He staved off two of the best defensive lines in the league, Washington and Philadelphia, posting an elite 95.6 run-blocking grade and 97.6 pass-blocking efficiency, both metrics scored out of 100.”

“At worst, Wheatley would provide solid, ascending depth at positions of viral importance need for the Patriots. Mac Jones was pressured on more than 40% of his dropbacks - 40! - in last week's exhibition at Green Bay. If the offensive line can't trust fourth-round rookie Sidy Sow, a career college guard now playing right tackle, it's in serious trouble.”

“The Patriots should patch their O-line by sending Cleveland their 2024 seventh-round pick that converts into one of the two sixth-rounders they own if Wheatley plays eight or more games.”

Now I want to know what is klemm doing from a coaching perspective. The backups seem awful. Do we need to give some more time.

With Bob coming in we saw improvements in offense but with klemm the OLine appears worse.

Isn’t this kid the son of the RB from ScUM? I remember how touted this kid was in college. The son, not the dad RB. But notwithstanding his physical gifts, Jr never amounted to much. Square peg in a round hole.

Hopefully it’s coming together for him at IT.

Same negative takes from the usual assholes on here, never changes. Pats do nothing about OL and these posters complain, Pats acquire a guy for said OL, same posters complain. All I have to say to all of you whinging ****ers is get a life, or better again ( sorry Ian), piss off from this Patriots fan forum.

I think 3 rbs rham, the ewok and jj... Though jj might get practice squad for the initial 53

As for the line, I have no idea what they are going to do... If Wheatley is serviceable you might see sow move to guard... Leaves mcdermott at left? Ferentz left guard, Andrews center sow right guard and really no idea who starts at RT...

Wheatley at RT kinda scares me tbh

Maybe a serviceable vet get squeezed out on cut down day who can do in a pinch... Think we need some experience in that spot, considering Mac's propensity to take sacks instead of getting rid of the ball
Harris is better than Taylor. Neither are worth much.

All true. Except for Wynn. Not sure if I remember correctly, but didn’t we just let him go?

If so, we could have used him at LT. I suspect things could have worked out much better last year with Wynn at LT and Trent Brown at RT.

Much better.

It’s just that rookie who needed babysitting. Damn him.

I meant if the relationship was not so broken we could have resigned him for what we signed reiff for and he would have probably been a better player.

Patricia killed the OLine and also the prospect of growth for wynn and our relationship with him. On a side note thanks to Patricia we drafted gonzo and white .

Wheatley will probably be better than where Sow is at now, and just better than McDermott period. With Reiff hurt, Onwenu just coming back from PUP, and Anderson still on NFI, there’s major question marks at RT no matter who the starter is. This helps. Curious how much he can get caught up on the system in a couple weeks.

Moving him to RT has been a move borne out of desperation.

Groh said after the draft that the Pats drafted Sow to be a tackle - not a move of desperation. Maybe give him more than one training camp to develop since he was a guard in college. Let's see ....................................................

Great to see this move, a relatively young player at the position of greatest current need on their roster IMHO. I look at this as a replacement for what I at least thought they may get with Anderson. Two benefits of this are giving Anderson time to recuperate (from a football standpoint, if that is possible), and giving Sow more time to develop.

I’m hopeful about Sow, I focused on him a lot this preseason, saw plenty to like (I thought he moved well, kept his balance well, was good with his hands, and had no penalties that I can recall) but he is quite far from being ready to go up against high caliber NFL players. I was surprised and disappointed that they didn’t try him at LT so far, he couldn’t possibly have been worse than McDermott or Steuber. McDermott is I think a backup RT at best and I’ve seen nothing from Steuber that convinces me he is an NFL caliber player. Tells me I don’t know very much.

As I’ve expressed a number of times on this forum, I am deeply concerned for Anderson’s health, I don’t expect to see him on the field for the Pats this season, and sincerely hope he can overcome his illness whatever it is.

Credit where credit is due to Andrew Callahan.

Are you sure about that 290 figure? Other sources, including Reiss, indicate that he is 320 lbs.
PFR says 290 but maybe that’s an old number.

Edit: he converted from TE so this makes sense.

BB said that Taylor has been improving every year. Maybe BB was just saying nice things, or maybe JJ can now pick up the blitzer. We will see. JJ is great at bouncing outside which is fun to watch.

Always talk of talent but little about style and fit.
Strong has talent ... apparently does not have a good fit here.
Drafted when the crowned clown was here .... we need OT's ... they liked him before ... no need for drama here.
