Can the Line hold up?

This last preseason game was the 1st time I've really analyzed the offensive line in any capacity, and I have an incredibly basic and probably highly naive question that's really been bothering me for a very long time now. I know about the ineligible man downfield rule, but during passing plays, why the heck are OL moving backwards while pass protecting? It makes zero sense to me from a momentum and time conservation perspective - someone's coming at you, and you're moving backwards. There are times when Guards are making contact with DL 3-4yds behind the line of scrimmage after backpedaling. Why not move slightly forward to meet them just before the line, and that disrupts momentum / acceleration, buying a lot more time? I can see this being even more disruptive for stunts. Tackles I can understand having to shuffle, especially with Edge rushers lining out wide.

On snaps under center, I'm having trouble remembering, but have QBs been able to reliably handoff without turning all the way around (picturing something similar to a handoff from shotgun)? Guessing way too much risk / trust / timing between QB and RB.

This is a domino following based on our not drafting a bona fide OT. Sow could get there this season. We’re stretched thin at the position.

Bill, did you really need to lose your cool and trade up for a kicker?

Practice squad material. But anything is better than Steuber.
They like Stueber. They really do. Not so much us fans.

I frown on him as an OT from what I’ve seen. Candidate to be moved inside a la Reiff.

Without more depth at OT the season could have been lost with an injury or two.

Only two guys until this trade can play LT, TB and Anderson.

A bunch of candidates at RT, all flawed: rookie guard Sow, broken down Reiff, and the McDermott Project. Watching the former Jets PS player pass block is like watching a teenage girl drive a stick shift. It might work but it certainly won’t be pretty.

Haven't read the whole thread... Don't know if this has been brought up... Anyone think we should kick the tires on cajuste see if he's still injured? Temp RT signing, familiar with the o

Yes, the selection of a kicker was necessary since there were only 2 decent kickers in the entire draft, one had been taken earlier, and there were several teams that needed one. Kickers are important.

I would not place too much emphasis on this being a move to shore up anything, since Pierre Strong was going to be cut. Wheatley is a body, that's it. Not an answer or a solution. He's just the same as a signing.

The only 2 OTs I see taken after Ryland are Carter Warren and Jaelyn Duncan.

Why not wait to see if Sidy Sow is worse than either of those two? If he's worse, then you have a point.

Time to bring in another tackle, Bill. Detroit has one they will probably have to cut. Germain Ifredi or Matt Nelson.

Why not dangle Joshua Bledsoe to the Lions? They are currently thin at safeties.

Perfect time for another trade.

Reiff doesn’t have enough in the tank to make it through a season as a tackle. Anderson is medically off the team currently. Bill is not sure if he’s even going to be available this season.

Desperate time if Trent Brown goes down. You know, the second most important position on the team?

Ifredi was cut... But he sucks.

Riley Reiff is old. He was born Dec 1, 1988, when Ronald Reagan was President and before Belichick had even begun as a head coach.

It was a crap shoot bringing him in and expecting contributions game in game out all season.

Imagine our RT doing this? Sow, next year maybe. McDermott or Reiff? Um, no. No way.

That's Mekhi Becton. He's a huge bust and disappointment.

He’d be a huge upgrade for us. Give him this season to see if he stays healthy.

Becton was the #11 pick in the draft in 2021. You want to suck like the JETEs that get an OT like Becton. LOL. You had a couple of reasonable criticisms and then fell off a cliff.

Is there anything out there like this for us to watch with Adrian Klemm and our offensive line?
