It’s as simple as if Mac struggles out of the gate and Zappe continues to show promise then the switch will be made.Right. I think they view him as a good backup without much falloff from Mac. But I don't think they view him as potential starter instead of Mac.
That’s seems to be the reports. But it also seems like he’s getting worked over on the boundaries. He doesn’t really excel there so once they move him back to slot and not covering the TE’s he could be more productive.Marcus seems to be having a terrible camp as a CB.
Yep keep the shorties over the middle with a Safety lurking to clean up.That’s seems to be the reports. But it also seems like he’s getting worked over on the boundaries. He doesn’t really excel there so once they move him back to slot and not covering the TE’s he could be more productive.
As I said, based on his behavior, My biggest fear is that Mac lacks essential composure and is thus prone to make bad decisions when the play breaks down. He can work well in structured environment like making RPO reads efficiently, but is maybe too excitable to handle pressure well. As Lazar actually said in the 8/1 podcast, he looks liked he's scared about throwing into tight NFL windows. Confidence is an emotional issue.
Maybe, as you said, he's traumatized by his failure last year and will grow out of it or be coached out of it.
BOB can scheme around it, but if Mac doesn't acquire (or rediscover!) the assassin's confidence that all the great QB's have he will never be great.
Lazar was the one touting all of Mac's big time throws last year. By definition, those are balls thrown into tight NFL windows.
I didn't listen to what he said on his podcast because I haven't listened to it yet, but I have to think you might not have heard what he said correctly.

Damn paywalls.Chad Graff of The Athletic on his day watching Mac's every move:
One day following Mac Jones’ every move at Patriots training camp
Ahead of a potentially career-defining season, we followed the quarterback for the entirety of Tuesday's practice to see how he's preparing.theathletic.com
Because "anticipation" as a trait means in-system - plays unfolding as designed whereas break downs are out of system and improvisation so this is in fact not outside of those scouting reports. That said, my opinion is improvisation can be learned in the same way anticipation is - by repetition. The problem is because of last year, a lot of his strengths have become perceived weaknesses for some reason. On top of anticipation, he has gotten a rep for horrible pocket presence which is not the case.
I'm not one of the one's sh*tting on Mac. I'm still hoping that BOB can get him to the next level.
In that 8/1 podcast (which I listened to) Lazar outright said he has felt like he has been a Mac apologist and feels exposed. His main criticism was that Mac was running scared of throwing into NFL windows and if so, he wanted to see what Zappe could do.
Today he recanted his recantation and is back to being a Mac booster
I watched Mac's interview on NFL network today.. with Scott pioli.. I like what Mac said about the defense.. he said our D was top 5 in the league. He said it's tough going against them. He wasn't making excuses for the woes. But he was being truthful. I've been saying this all camp. The defenses strength last season was take aways, and holding teams in the red zone.Of course they view him as a potential starter. Mac hasn’t proven anything to make his job secure. He will definitely start the first few weeks but that’s about all he’s guaranteed, I think. I hope he has a great year, btw. Although I’m a skeptic I want to see him succeed.
I think if they viewed him as a starter, he would be practicing with the starters. It might just be semantics, but they view him as a potential starter if Mac fails or is injured. They don’t view him as a starter over Mac.Of course they view him as a potential starter. I could definitely see either Sow or Mafi in short yardage. Either one may be a good fit in those situations.I think this might a combination of early camp experimentation and injury necessity. This offense isn't going to feature a FB the way a McDaniels offense did, so they're not (likely) going to carry a true FB on the roster. But there will be times on the goal-line and 3rd/4th and 1 where you're going to want someone in that lead blocking role.
Typically, you'd just throw an extra OL in that spot, but injuries have them kind of thin there right now. You could also put a TE in that role, but in those specific situations you're typically also using three TE's in the formation. So unless you're planning on carrying 4 TE's on gameday, practicing that isn't going to really help much. So they're trying out Tavai to see if it can work.
We've seen them do similar things in the past, either for similar reasons or because their actual FB was injured, like when Elandon Roberts was filling the role.
I really don't know why ppl keep thinking that there is some QB battle. Mac is the QB of the team and the starter going forward. It's all up to Mac how he leads going forward. I like Zappe as he's a more than capable back up. How Mac's the guy. I just really wish last season didn't happen It's put this unfair rendition or him in people's minds. Mac is a seasoned version of the QB we saw lead In 2021.I think if they viewed him as a starter, he would be practicing with the starters. It might just be semantics, but they view him as a potential starter if Mac fails or is injured. They don’t view him as a starter over Mac.
