Anyone know about Chasen Hines? I was hoping he’d become at least an adequate backup to Mine Onwenu. But Bill Murray? Rewarding behavior methinks. Kid won’t quit.

Reminds me of the old country song: How can I miss you, when you won't go away?

I was a little disappointed none of the rookie OL were able to burst on the scene like Thuney did.

With Bill Murray starting at guard, this would seem to have been a great opportunity.

Bedard reports Sow is nowhere to be found, below McDermott and Steuber as a backup. Early, but not good.

Bill doesn’t typically give reps to rookies early on.

It’s day 1.

please no, I'd like to see passes over 5 yards this season and more than 15 throws a game
Yes a great running game is terrible for the passing game

this catch-22 is getting historical proportions:

no matter how many top picks and talent they pour into D - they still remain a Bryant injury away from having a solid unit

Yes. But I worry about teams drawing these hybrid defenders in toward the line of scrimmage on run fakes or even flea flickers and a guy getting behind Mapu, Peppers, Phillips, et al for a big gain. They need a speedster back there like McCourty used to be. The recovery speed is lacking except for Jonathan Jones.
That's why we all LOVE play action passes.

But, when at his best McCourty did a great job as the "last line of defense" for a LOT of great years. His tackling skills were very underrated and reported. The last line of defense's job isn't necessarily designed to break up plays, but to make sure the offense is forced to line up for another play on the drive.

If it ends up being Mills, he has enough speed to cover enough ground to be OK and his tackling is good enough. I thought he was more than adequate as an outside CB (especially in his 2nd year) I was actually surprised he was that effective. I had thought that his best position was FS. He has great instincts.

I guess my point in this "hybrid" thing is to point out that defenses are evolving away from having easily assigned position labels that we all grew up on.

Jalen Mills?
Shawn Wade could break through?
and don’t forget Neon Deions boy.

Jo Jones, Ma Jones, and Gonzo all have 4.3 speed. Mills and Ja Jones are not slow.

Thuney got starter reps from day one.

I think Andrews did as a UFA too.

Sometimes the Pats give a guy a good long last look before cutting him. Sometimes, as you note, a rookie is slotted in from the start - I think Strange was. Never know what is being planned.
