PFT: Bill "has shopped" Mac

Not open for further replies.
I do wonder if Bill looks at the situation last year and thinks "Well, yeah, Patricia as my OC was kind of a **** plan that didn't work out at all, but it would've gone a little better if Mac had been on board instead of working against us." Bill might feel like if Mac had bought in a little more, even if he didn't like the direction, would've probably resulted in 1 or 2 more wins and a playoff berth. He also compares that to how Zappe just did what he was told and the offense was relatively smooth, if not necessarily an overall great offense.
Part of me wonders if BOB is cool on Mac and IF there have been trade talks is more related to BOB's assessment of Mac than's Bill's

Now this out of Florio's mouth "There might not be any merit to the Jones trade rumors, and Patriots owner Robert Kraft has made it clear that he’s a big fan of the Alabama product"
And the tweet about 3 teams saying "Patriots never called them".
Strongly suggests this whole thread is just click bait and nonsense.
That’s not out of Florio’s mouth, that’s from the NESN commentary.
Mike Florio Suggests Possible 1-For-1 Mac Jones Trade For Patriots

To my knowledge, Florio has not backed down.

What we do have is Florio and Doug Kyed (who is a respectable reporter) on one side, and Mark Daniels, Andrew Callahan, and Tom Curren (reporting that Belichick denied it) on the other.

Gronk: I want a new deal
Bill: No
Gronk: Please
Bill: No. If you can't play here on your current deal we'll trade you to someone who will (enter Detroit)
Gronk: Fine, i'll just retire and do Monster drink stuff
Bill: Fine. We still own your rights and you can't do a damn thing about it.
Gronk: Fine, i'll play.
Are these quotes? Or you speculating?

Gronk's another player who came out on top after parting ways with Belichick. Brady to Gronk TWICE in SB 55... I think a couple of Samsung's met their demise in the Belichick household that night.

I think there is a lot of truth to this. Seems to be a very reasonable take.

The takes that BB is still pissed at Mac, or BB does not support Mac, seem over the top to me. Mac could have been a lot better, Zappe is a good, hard working kid with talent, so BB wants to see if Mac can turn the emotional corner and mature before committing to Mac. Even Saban talked about Mac's emotions while at 'Bama. And we all saw the over-emotional and unprofessional Mac on the field last year - nothing too bad, but something that has to be corrected. Mac does have to buy in, through good and bad, to be successful. That was one of the great things about TB12 - he bought in even though some fans thought he bought in too much.

Gronk was at the end of his career (or at least believed to be) and not still on his rookie deal. If Gronk was 25, Belichick would never have tried to trade him. He was I think 29 at the time and hadn’t played a full season in several years.
BB paid Gronk a top of the market deal after his rookie deal, we don’t have to speculate. I agree.

Not exactly.. Belichick is stating it's put up or shut up time for Mac. He knows everything he said holds weight and wants Mac to understand the situation he's in.
Apparently Bill is trying to trade Mac. So he'll understand the situation when he's playing for some halfwit like Todd 'toilet' Bowles.

The fact that Guregian is weighing in gives it a pinch of... gravitas for me. The original speculation aside, laying out all of the actual facts as she did really puts everything in perspective and didn't seem sensationalist. In other news, Matty P might be the architect who put in that thermal exhaust port...

Man, I'm usually a 20-0 guy at this time, but this continuing soap opera telenovela is exhausting. It's why I stopped watching WWF in the early 90s. Thankfully, I didn't stop watching the Pats then.
I don't see her adding any additional sources to substantiate the rumor.

She'll also fall into the trap of needing clicks but she is more reputable than most.

To show a United front to the fans and media and build confidence?

So they should come running to make a united front statement every time some mediot runs their mouth off for clicks?

Not going to happen

Half of these media whores are just trying to fill one of the blackout periods of the NFL season where nothing is going on

You know damn well that's not how it works in the NFL. Nearly every team in the NFL will know beyond any sliver of doubt whatsoever who their starting QB for the 2023 season will be heading into camp. Apparently the Patriots will be one of the very few teams who won't. That's NOT a good thing.
Garbage, Mac hasn’t earned anything yet, he’s still in the prove it stage.

There are news organizations that have not retracted stories proven to be made up. Happens all the time.

Kyed, Daniels, and Callahan are all good, I think Florio is a bozo, and Curran has lost his fast ball. P Perry also had a carefully worded tweet saying the report would be "stunning" if true, implying he highly doubts it without calling some fellow reporters out.

Thinking about it... I think I would as well.. the league has trended towards mobile QBs.. when you can move the pocket everyone's open.. my feelings are this:

Either with this reporting Mac's camp respectfully goes to RK and ask for a trade.

Or he ends up traded to SF for Lance..

Lance is more realistic Becuase he's on his rookie deal.. my opinion
If they do Kraft should use the same line he did about Lamar: Belichick makes those decisions. And then toss them out of his office, or hang up on them. Because that would be another example of Mac undermining BB’s authority.

My understanding is Gronk told Bill to FO after being told he had been traded to Detroit and Brady marched into Kraft's office and screamed WTF! Subsequently Kraft called Bill in for a meeting and told him to fix it immediately. Good thing too, they don't win SB 53 without Gronk. ************, Bill almost got another thing dreadfully wrong.
Are you serious? What is wrong with you? Almost everything you say about BB is negative. You seem to really focus on the drama and sensationalized reporting more than the fact that BB gets way more right than wrong and is loved by most of his players past and present. He is a deep thinker that seems to use different motivation techniques with different players and has been successful in the NFL for a long freaking time. You might be happier keeping up with daytime soap operas or Jerry Springer type shows.

On the flip side, I really like your dedication to this board and if you offered more positive takes once in a while, to balance out your constant negativity, I think you could add a lot of interesting insights.

Why would the Patriots trade for Trey Lance? If the 49ers are willing to trade him after two years and never having a chance to prove himself on the field after they spent three first round picks on him, that means he is wash up. Why would the Pats want to trade for another team's trash?
Trading trash for trash?

Gronk showed up at Gillette for a motocross event despite skipping team workouts because he wanted more money. He was interviewed at that event and uttered some stupid “zoom zoom” comment.

The next day BB had a trade in place with Detroit, Brady marched into Kraft’s office and complained… something you’ve argued in the past never occurred when it was AB and Sanu… then Gronk came back to play on his original contract with some incentives attached that he never reached.

He wasn’t going to win at poker with Bill because Bill was willing to walk away and trade his butt to Detroit. It was about money, not feelings.

Part of me wonders if BOB is cool on Mac and IF there have been trade talks is more related to BOB's assessment of Mac than's Bill's
Yeah I have also been wondering about how much BOB's opinion/assessment weighs into this. It's possible Bill has turned a lot of offensive evaluation over to BOB, and BOB has decided that he can get similar production from Mac or Zappe.

Exactly. Every team will go through tough situations or have a bad year. Bill put Mac through one such tough situation last year and the response from Mac was not great. He may not like what that says about Mac's leadership.

Think back to 2009 - Bill had issues with the locker room and the product on the field was not up to anyone's expectations. But you know who was definitely not working against Bill in 2009? Tom Brady.

Are these quotes? Or you speculating?
Gronk said it and I put the pieces together. He was traded and told the team he retired. Ironically enough, he got an additional $4m in incentives before the 2018 season which increased the value of his deal to $13m. They did the same thing for him in 2017. He always complained via Rosenhaus his pay. I have no issue with him using leverage to get more $. Good for him.

Gronk's another player who came out on top after parting ways with Belichick. Brady to Gronk TWICE in SB 55... I think a couple of Samsung's met their demise in the Belichick household that night.
Gronk was sick of this place. He had enough.

At the same time, Bill hasn't done much to suggest he does want Mac to be his QB. You can sort of point to the hiring of BOB, but the team needed an OC regardless so he may have likely hired BOB whether Mac was rostered or not.

A point Florio made on a podcast yesterday which rings true - if Bill thinks a QB is his starter, he makes it pretty damn clear. He scoffed and rolled his eyes and chastised reporters for years when people suggested Brady should be benched for Garoppolo. In the Cam Newton year, he clearly stated at every opportunity that Cam is the QB. You can kind of see Bill taking a somewhat similar approach last offseason putting praise on Mac, but during the season that completely disappeared and he has very purposefully chosen not to say Mac is their guy and that this offseason will be a competition. I really don't think Bill believes in him at the moment.
Good observation. From that it seems Bill saw how Mac was handling himself and the situation and gave him a failing grade. Makes sense. Belichick puts players in position to have opportunities and then reacts to how they handle them. Mac had the opportunity to show how he handles adversity and did not do well with that opportunity. He also hasn’t done particularly well handling adversity on the field has he?

Garbage, Mac hasn’t earned anything yet, he’s still in the prove it stage.
He hasn't proven he's a starting NFL quarterback?
