That exact quote actually came out of Patricia's mouth, not Belichick's, so I apologize for the confusion, but what's the difference? I'm pretty sure Belichick and Patricia would be on the same page regarding availability of players and the game plan. Digging further into it, Patricia also said this: "if he was called upon, he was ready to play..." and "you know, he was ready to go if we needed him..."
Here are quotes from some of Butler's teammates...
Eric Rowe:
(On whether he knew he would be starting)
"No. It wasn't official until kickoff."
Good thing the coaching staff had Rowe in the right mindset .
(On if he thought Butler could've helped the defense)
"Yeah, we could have used anybody. Whoever the coaches throw in, obviously we have full confidence in them to affect the game. We could have used anybody."
(On whether they expected Butler to not play)
"No, that wasn't the plan."
(On if he had an idea as to why Butler did not play)
"No."
Stephon Gilmore:
(On his initial thoughts on Butler not playing)
"I don't know, you have to ask the coaches that. We rotated in practice a lot, but you have to ask the coaches. That's the coaches' decision."
(On why Butler didn't play)
"You have to ask the coach. I don't know."
Devin McCourty:
(On if he spoke to Butler)
"I think we all were just trying to get ready. I think he stayed ready on the field. He was ready to go."
Duron Harmon:
(On if Butler not playing was a surprise)
"You have to ask coach about that. That's a personnel decision. He makes all the personnel decisions."
(On if he spoke to Butler during or after the game)
"I told him to stay ready. You never know. I tried to tell him to stay ready. He stayed tuned the whole time, cheering teammates on."
James Harrison:
(On if the defense was given an explanation on why Butler did not play)
"I don't know. That's something you have to ask coach."
So we can add several of his teammates to the list of players and coaches who said Butler was ready to play. Also, it's obvious the coaching staff did a very poor job of communicating with the players. Inexcusable, especially in preparation for a Super Bowl.
