Reports are the Pats may upgrade the WRs through trade (not necessarily Hopkins)

Oversimplification time: OL is about your offense's floor, Weapons are about your offense's ceiling.

We need OL in order to have a competent offense, otherwise everything will fall apart regardless.

But we'll need upgrades to the skill positions if we're going to contend in the AFC.

Our 2023 Schedule agrees with that statement.

A solid, not necessarily spectacular OL is a basic requirement. From there all the talk about skill positions has been focused on WR and then TE. The biggest skill gap last year was the lack of a true third down back like James White. That role has always been key to the Pats offense and was missing last year. Montgomery scored the only TD vs Miami before being injured for the rest of the year. Maybe Strong or a healthy Montgomery will fit the bill.

The misuse of Hunter and Smith was one of Patricia's biggest crimes. Smith is fast for his size, does really well after the catch and can block well against backs and corners. But he's not a great route runner or contested catcher. So he will feature in RPOs this year, coming out of the backfield on jet sweeps, wheel routes and the like. Hunter was forced to stay in and block big guys because our OL was weak and he simply can't do that well. Two years ago he was a very reliable red zone option, and then last year he was invisible.

Nope. Not whatever. Just reality..

Seems like a bad idea to me - you only get one year under present contract.

You make the deal contingent on him signing a new contract. It's been done in the past.

Anyone trading for Higgins would have already negotiated a deal before the trade. That is how it happens all the time. Once a trade parameters are agreed to, the acquiring team is usually given permission to talk to a player to see if they can get a deal before the trade is processed. Both Davante Adams and Tyreek Hill got new deals at the time of their trades. Both their trades and new deals were announced at the same time.

I keep hearing people repeat this idea and I don’t think Cincy trades him at all. He is on a cheap contract. The proven formula for success in this league is having guys outperforming their contracts, and then you build strength in other places with the money you have to spend. The Bengals have gone to one Super Bowl and one AFC title game the last two years. The are looking to improve not dump.

Teams that dump stud WR’s like Adams(who wanted top NFL WR money), Hill (who wanted top WR money), or AJ Brown (wanted top WR money) all had a QB that was going to be a massive cap hit and had other team deficiencies. Even when Burrow and Chase extend, they won’t be massive cap hits in year 1- they will have a lower annual base made up by massive guaranteed money and signing bonus.They will count on Higgins balling out in a contact year.

Higgins is staying to try to help them win a Super Bowl, and they will get a third round comp when he walks.

Not only that. The Bengals are in excellent position cap wise.

Don't know if it's the booze, but that's some really deep schitt right there. Well done.

Just equivalent to what we already have.

This is correct. That is why they traded for Davante Parker last year. Parker was a formal 1st round pick, fairly cheap, and no other options were available in FA for 2 years. Parker's contract is up this year. Like him or hate him, it was a good strategy but might not work out. We will see. Maybe his 2nd year clicks for him with BOB.

There does not seem to be much love for Jerry Jeudy. Is it not a better proposition for acquiring Jeudy who is younger/faster than going the older WR route eg Agolor/Sanu. (Hopkins/Cooks). Jeudy would also be cheaper than Higgins.

If im cincy id absolutely want to keep him at that price and be all in for 2023. It may not be their choice though if he becomes a distraction/holdout situation with being grossly underpaid. From what I remember last offseason, all the great wrs of the 2019 draft got big new deals before their 4th year started or got traded and extended. In his mind hes probably thinking why would i be treated any different.

I love this "reports are  may" bullschitt.....the Pats MAY go undefeated, Mac Jones MAY throw 60 TDs, my cat MAY dismember a parrot, Belichick MAY be nice to reporters....

I like the parrot thing especially.

Cousin,
I feel you are right about Jeudy. There is too much not to like including a connection to Jones.
But...alas....we need two WR. Would Bill pay Meyers $16mm versus perhaps a 2nd round pick #46 and have Jeudy for $4.6mm this year and $12mm his fifth year....or cut him. Is Jeudy worth more than any "definite maybe" and is only 23 years old, that you would get at #46?.....anybody....anybody? His speed is 4.46 and can run routes. There is always "if" the Broncos will trade him.

Then there is FA Parris Campbell who can play the slot and has speed to burn (4,31) . He can be had for $6mm? He is 25. His numbers were close to Meyers on a crappy QB situation worse than ours. So for $11mm we get two WR with speed versus about $16mm for Meyers and $18mm plus a big trade for Higgins. .....most likely our #14.

Jeudy=67, catches 972 yards and 6 TDs 15 games

Campbell=63, catches 623 yards 3 TDs 17 games

Versus

Meyers=67 catches 804 yards 6 TDs 14 games

Agholor=31 catches 362 yards 3 TDs 14 games (4 games with "0" catches)

Love Meyers but add Jeudy and Campbell instead of he and Agholor Then you have Thornton, Parker and Bourne and your WR room is set. You have added massive speed, Some size as Campbell is 6' and Jeudy is 6'1". Thornton is 6'2" and Parker is 6'3" so there is that.
