2023 Mock Drafts

The Patriots have traded up in or into the second round five years in a row, so that seems like a reasonable prediction in a mock and has a decent chance to grab quite a bit better of a player.

2022: 54 and 158 for 50
2021: 46, 122, and 139 for 38
2020: 71 and 98 for 60 and 129
2019: 56 and 101 for 45
2018: 63 and 117 for 56

And this is harsh because it’s a really cool tool overall, but PFF’s rankings are so out there sometimes that the process feels less like a mock draft and more like an evaluation of their rankings. The biggest discrepancy this year seems to be the small WRs, which makes it especially annoying to work with. For example, both Jeremiah’s top 50 rankings and Reuter’s two round mock say a small trade up to 40 is enough to get Zay Flowers. Brugler’s top 100 that just came out has him at 55, not even requiring a trade up. That doesn’t work on the PFF simulator because he’s long gone (20 in the one I just did).

PFF also says a trade up to 40 isn’t even enough to get Tank Dell, who went 37. Brugler’s top 100 has him at 86, and even that is one of the higher rankings I’ve seen outside of PFF.

The option sliders wreak havoc as well. The "Randomness" slider should read "Idiocy" or "Jets Mode" - all the way right and you've got top 20 talent available in the late 3rd. I also think there is too much position bias. LB and TE are (it seems) docked when picked.

I just did this one (settings included)/ The trade is a pipe dream, but I would love it.

I wasn't really sure where to go at 46 though. Would love to hear people's thinking on picking in in the second round of the PFF simulator? Would you go tackle in the second round if you went tackle in the first? Or would you draft at a position that really isn't a need because there is a good player there (edge, HB)? I often like to go receiver but I'm not a huge Hyatt fan (he seems very similar to Thornton to me), it also seems a little early for Rashee Rice or Parker Washington at 46.

If a LT is chosen with our first pick, and Zay Flowers isn't available with our second, then I might look at the next wave of available CBs such as (I hope) Manny Forbes, Ty Stevenson, Deonte Banks, Jaylon Jones and maybe Alabama's Eli Ricks...

I don’t follow college football. I’m not going to know who is a better player at any given position. But I will say IMO Jack Jones will be good enough to be CB1 and Marcus is a very good slot CB. Wade can also back up M. Jones if needed. Mills at CB2 is good enough most of the time.

I always thought Jon Jones would be a great FS especially with his speed but that may not be an option anymore. I’m fine with McCourty coming back but I do think they need help there possibly in rounds 3 though 6.

IMO we should look for 1-2 WR’s in rounds 3-6 and sign a FA or trade for one.

I always say the 1st few rounds should be dedicated for the trenches and QB. I’d like to see 2 OT’s drafted early.

Some really Big guys in this CB class we have done well on day 3 at that position.
Thanks for the info, but don't you think that the 3cone time is AS important or even more so than the 40. What I'm looking for is a guy who can accelerate out of his cuts. A guy who has make up speed. You get a better idea of THAT skill set from the 3cone drill. In today's game speed DOES matter. I would much rather my CB's be sub 4.5 in the but I would DEMAND that they be sub 6.9 in the 3 cone.

That is a great skill that you CAN'T test for, you have to SEE it.
This goes with WR's as well. I was never worried about Thornton's size and build, but I was HORRIFIED by his 3cone time. What good is straight ahead speed, when you hardly EVER run in a straight line in football.

The other skill set that doesn't get tested or talked about much for both WR's and DB's is their ability to track the ball. Great receivers and DB's have the ability to know exactly where the ball is going to end up almost from the second the ball leaves the QB's hand and get there first. So often we see guys on both sides of the ball misplay throws that are underthrown or overthrown. The really great WR's most always seem to be the ones who react first to an underthrown ball, or to highpoint the ball EXACTLY at the right time. That is a great skill that you CAN'T test for, you have to SEE it.

So rather than constantly get 40 times as the great indicator I think we need to see more about THESE skills from our scouting reports when they are highlighting these prospects

No offense, but why does PFF allow trades as lopsided as that first one? In real life, 14 gets you 16 and 97.
No idea, just going by what I could get and there were no forced trades

A lot of you guys drafting TE Darnell Washington at 76 in round 3, depending what he does at the combine, he might be the 1st TE off the board, maybe even 1st round. I’d be shocked if he lasts until 76.

No my guess is the first TE off the board will be Musgrove out of Oregon, and 2nd will be the ND kid. Either of which I would be sorely tempted to take in round 2 if they were there. We have seen that a great TE can make as big an impact to an offense as a great WR. So instead of taking the WR with that pick in the 2nd the right TE could have a bigger impact.

In one mock Musgraves was there in the 2nd and HAD to grab him even though the need for and OT and WR seem greater (to a CB with the #1)

I just did a PFN mock that was nothing but interesting

I was offered 2 trades that I just couldn't say no to and wound up with the Colts 1st 2nd in 5th rounder in 2024 plus #37 for #14 and dropped down 2 spots in the 2nd and got Seattle's 2024 3rd

Now usually I have passed on these offers because they were for future low first round picks. However the Colts with a new coach and a new QB MIGHT be a top 10 pick next year or at worst a mid first round pick. And I couldn't pass it up.

I couldn't pass up the best TE in the draft at 37 and still got a quality (I think) OT prospect with a high ceiling and some risk in Mauch.

The next 2 picks give us CB size and good althleticism in Ricks, while Overshawn gives us some much needed speed at ILB

I got a solid C/G prospect in Stromberg and then doubled up at CB (garner another 6'2 CB) and grabbed an edge guy who's got similar profile as Wise (Ali) Both coming from a strong LSU program

With my last 2 picks I took flyers on the Princeton WR with the unspellable name, and the Louisville QB, who at worst will be a good scout team QB in weeks we are playing teams that have running QB's on their roster.

After making that trade I was pleasantly surprised a what was there for me that I could fill most of the needs with guys who might not suck and get some REAL assets in 2024. Next year we will be competing to get into the playoffs, we WON'T be competing for a title. Lets get better THIS year and have some REAL draft capital for the first time in about 20 years in April 2024

What do you think about the Colts trade? Would you have taken Musgraves before a surer OT pck at 37?
