Does Belichick Last Beyond 2023, and What Needs to Happen?

Our top players are now becoming vets. Our defense is coming together.
Yes.
I'm assuming our tackle problem is going to be fixed. It was the major problem impacting the offense. When Mac looked really bad after he came back from injury, it was with Cajuste and McDermott letting people run free. Patricia threw up his hands at that point and went screen, screen, screen.
It's going to take bringing in an elite OT in FAcy (are there any?) which means $$$ or getting lucky in the draft (a possibility).
The Patriots have very few holes. On defense, it's the 2 LBs who are not good at all in the passing game. On offense it's the 2 tackles.
Disagree. We need a CB1. Our smurf CBs were exposed against the better teams. Is Guy staying or do we replace him? Will Barmore stay healthy and consistent? Is Uche a one trick pony? Who takes McCs place?

On O we need a productive TE. We have 2 expensive TEs that combined aren't top 20. Need a WR1. Need Mac to play much better.
We are limited at WR ad QB and we will continue to be limited there. But elsewhere there are no limitations.

Sure. The whole roster has turned over in the last 3-4 yrs. We still have gone 10-8, 9-8 ,8-9. I am not happy as fan at all. But the current landscape isnt the worst. And moving on from BB to any new coach is another 2-3 yrs of rebuild. Its not like this roster is built to win now. You can blame BB for that but still a new coach will start again from scratch to rebuild.

If BB is going to remain in place to pass Shula's record he better get someone on staff capable of succeeding him after it happens so a somewhat seamless transition is possible. Patricia better not be who he has in mind. I'd be OK with BOB coming in to run the offense and later segue to HC, but he apparently hasn't been contacted yet which has me a bit nervous.

But isn't that going to eventually happen anyway? I know there are posters that want Bill to coach until he dies but the record of the very few coaches in their 70s isn't good. Look, the dynasty is dead. Bill isn't getting any younger. Are we expecting that once he retires (he won't get fired nor should he) that someone is going to continue his traditions/system into the future? Who? Lil Stephen? There has to be a change made with a new GM and a new HC, soon. It's happening. Shouldn't they get to decide how the team is built for the future to lessen the transition period? We need to be practical about this. There has to be a plan aside from let's wait for Bill to beat Shula's record.

When have teams successfully used “succession plans”?
Some have promoted long time assistants when the coach retires like Seifert, Pettigrew, Handley but other than Seifert who inherited a champion it hasn’t been effective that I can see.

Last March, Robert Kraft said he was “bothered” by the Patriots’ lack of recent playoff success and expected the team to return to contender status this season. Instead, New England failed to make the postseason for the second time in three years despite fielding one of the NFL’s best defenses and returning nearly all of their offensive contributors from 2021. The Patriots now have gone four straight seasons without a playoff win since defeating the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl LIII.

I am not really sure BOB is the direction they will go. It seems like a media driven storyline which first pairs them and then creates a story of him not being contacted etc.

What you going to do now Bob?

I happen to agree with "the media" in this specific instance. BOB has a lot to recommend him, including institutional familiarity with the Patriots, solid experience running offenses and prior work with Mac. Plus, I believe his HC stint in Houston was underrated. And he has family roots here.

I agree...still feel like there was something physical that he didn't want to admit. The drop off was just too dramatic.

And I think Stidham got mad at the signing and something was said. Because when Newton faltered, he never got a shot, so that was definitely telling.
Cam was also better before he got Covid. Didn't Edelman have his most yards in a game ever with Cam?

So let’s do this. Eliminate first rounders because during a run of 4 SBs in 5 years with the GOAT you aren’t using a 1 on a QB.

Here are the QBs drafted after round 1 from
2017-2019
Kizer
Webb
Beathard
Dobbs
Peterman
Kaaya
Kelly
Rudolph
Lauleta
White
Falk
Lee
Etling
Mcgough
Woodside
Lock
Grier
Finley
Stidham
Stick
Thorson
Minshew
Mcsorley

Anyone criticizing not drafting a QB in those years is either ignorant to reality or just lying.
Lol, it actually looked like they may have picked the best one in the bunch in Stidham too.

I would continue to augment the DL and keep that pass rush together. Barmore, Uche, Wise, Judon. They can damage these offenses with a relentless pass rush. But we need more DL who can give these guys a breather.

If you have a great pass rush, you can more than get by with the 4 CBs that we have (3 Jones & Mills).

Look at the Bengals. They are not nearly as good as we are at CB and they kept both Mahomes/Reid and Stafford/McVay in check. It's because the Bengals D-line disrupted the passing game.

We pressured the F out Allen and he just burnt us. Same with Cousins and Burrow. Mahomes would do the same. Higgins was bullying Marcus. Need at least 6'1" CB. Jamael Dean is available in FAcy.

Hoping this is satire. Not funny.

My “sabbatical” wasn’t wasted at all. It was thoroughly enjoy able to not deal with the disaster this place has become because of posters like you. My return was triggered by the prospect of the changes Ian is going to make that will mitigate the damage people like you do to this site. But thanks for your concern.
And you telling everyone how bad they’ve made this site and whining about anyone who doesn’t agree with you makes this site more enjoyable?

“I expect them to start playing their best football at the end of the year”. They ended this year losing 5 of 7, last year 4 of 6. How did they end in 2019 and 2020?

What point are you trying to make?

They made the playoffs in 2019 and 2021. They didn't in 2020 and 2022.

Over that period 5 different QBs have started games. That's not good.

Are they a contender? No

Do they suck in the 2nd 1/2 of seasons? Yup.

Will BB be in NE beyond 2023?

No, not if BB finds a QB and wins his 7th Super Bowl as NE Patriots HC/GM.

My point was how can anybody make that assumption? They’ve crumbled late in the season for 4 years now. It’s more than a trend, it might be who they are

Matt Patricia is not throwing 3 INTs in Buffalo.

Matt Patricia called a play that had Devante Parker down the seam for a walk in TD. The ball was underthrown. Parker had to slow down and look back for the ball that hit him in the helmet. Again, the same way the ball was underthrown to Parker in the 1st game of the season @ Miami. Another deep ball for a TD that ran out of gas and was INTed.
