Reiss: Jack Jones and Jake Bailey moved to "Reserve/Suspended"

God forbid discipline is exacted with the goal of eradicating undesirable behavior....
Many players have chafed at BB's disciplined approach when they were young only to return after learning that the alternative is worse. Jamie Collins is now being credited as being a positive influence on younger players after being a problem during his first tour of duty.

The Bailey situation is confusing. The stories in the media say that the team suspended him for refusing to play when he was healthy, the agent claims the player wanted to play and was held out by the team. Knowing that there will is a grievance process, I can't imagine the team would pick a fight that they don't think they can win.
I look at it from a PR perspective.

Jack Jones’ agent takes accountability for Jones because the Patriots hold his rights for 3 more years on the cheap, he’s not going anywhere.

Jake Bailey’s agent denies the allegations because he knows Bailey is getting cut in a few weeks and he doesn’t want other teams thinking Bailey is a slacker during this upcoming free agency period, he wants to get paid again. They’ll file the grievance even if they’re in the wrong just to save their bacon now and try to keep Bailey’s image clean a while longer and hope to keep perception of him in a good light long enough to get another nice contract somewhere else in 2 months.

It feels like (from my perspective) respect for authority is very thin this season, so perhaps Bill had to take a more drastic approach to send a message. At the same time, it’s possible that these issues with Jack Jones only occurred in the first place due to that lessened respect for authority.
Possibly. It seems over the last of 3-4 years Bill has taken a softer approach with players and I think for the most part it's been effective.

Unfortunately it doesn't work with those players who are entitled, lack self-discipline or respect the organizational culture.

With those players if they can't change their behavior, get rid of them as a team cannot function at a high level.

That might be part of it. Guessing here but Bailey knows he's getting cut and while he may not be 100%, did not want to risk aggravating the injury and give teams pause in signing him as a FA thus slow-rolling his availability/refusing to be activated.

The team felt he was pulling a JD Drew so they suspended him.

Not sure, I understand. Cutting Bailey next year cost 4.4 million in cap before the suspension. Keeping him only cost 3.4.

Bailey would have at least been brought to camp to compete for the job.

Sad to say, but unless a shoe falls for Bailey, on surface this looks like the team is using the suspension to negotiate a better out.

Forget about the cap implications.

My guess is Bailey chose not to play when he was deemed healthy by the team. I'm speculating as to why.

They lost the AB suspension fight, though they did end up paying only $5M out of $9M. Maybe they're trying the same approach to save money. Who knows.

The cap implication is everything to the situation. Bailey wasn't going to be cut until August at the earliest, and everyone knew this.

The only logical explanation is he didn't want to worsen his back (which has been ongoing for two years) for one game, especially when the team is a mess.

I hate to say it, but agreed.

I tend to believe BB over the player too. However, I also like the different opinions. In the case of Jake Bailey, it sure seems like the player was wronged. But we don't know for sure either way. That is why there are different opinions.

Those who question the fandom of others who don't have pompoms waving no matter what come across as really soft and pathetic.
They better kiss and make up with Jack Jones. Because I'm sure we would love to see Slowquan for another four years.

That does makes sense (although sense is not always the operating principle).

No one knows the true story here...however BB and the pats have had a history with moves like this and with angry players.
So does every other freaking team.

We got Randy Moss because he was pissed off at da Raiders.

There's a reason why there's a grievance process: players grieve a lot.

This forum thinks it happens a lot here because we focus intensely on the Pats and not on other teams.

That, and we have a lot of whiners here.

It's just a guess. Could be something nefarious conducted by the NEP as well. Not ruling that out.

Based on what Miguel published, for the relatively small amt of $ and cap savings I just don't think the NEP would risk an NFLPA or league investigation without ironclad proof Bailey refused to play.

Moss didn't file a grievance against the Raiders.

That makes a huge difference. Not.

Point is there are players that are angry with their teams all over the league.

The point was players filing a grievance against their teams. Moss did not file one against the Raiders. That was the point. Keep up.

I replied to "BB and the pats have had a history with moves like this and with angry players."

IMO part of the disrespect for the coaches stems from the bad job most of them have done this season and the person that hired them.
Yes, that, but you have to admit a noticeable percentage of the posters have hated BB even before this season started, and now they have the sharp knives out.

Yeah....I can't judge (no pun intended) a situation that hasn't happened yet. Now that the season is almost over...we all see the issues.

Its not a question of hate. BB has done a poor job this year as both gm and coach and it is perfectly OK to respectfully call him out on that. He said himself, hold him accountable. He is getting paid 20 million per year…..he should be called out

The era of blind BB worship should have ended 5 years ago
