Game Day Thread Official Post Game Thread- Pats beat Arizona

THIS IS OUR LIVE GAME DAY THREAD:

This is where we gather to follow things on Game Day. Obviously, emotions tend to be high so if anyone gets a little crazy, the use of the “Mute” button is encouraged on anyone who may be annoying to you to control your experience and to allow the moderators to also enjoy the game.

At the same time, please take a deep breath before over-reacting for the sake of making this a pleasant experience for everyone.

I think people definitely overrate what it means to be a "playoff caliber" team. Nearly every season going back to when the NFL introduced the 6 seed playoff format has had one or multiple teams who qualified for the playoffs that were up and down 9-7 type teams that did just barely enough to get in. There's a distinct difference between being a playoff caliber team and legitimate contending team. The Patriots may end up a playoff caliber team, but aren't a Super Bowl contending team. I don't think anyone had us being a SB contender before the season started anyway, so making the playoffs would be a nice accomplishment if you ask me.
Plus, there always seems to be some roughly .500 or less division winner. This year’s candidate comes from the NFC South, where no team has a winning record as the league enters Week 15.

MP is in over his head.
But I laugh at all these media clowns ranting about all the screen passes. If you're gonna cover the nfl shouldnt you have beyond just a basic knowledge of the game?
Our ol can't block. Period. Mac running for his life almost every play. No way in hell can they attempt any deep passes.
That's why the scheme is what it is.
The #1 issue is NOT MP. Not Mac. Not the wrs. It's the extremely offensive line.
Yes injuries on the ol have played a part. But Wynn sucked when he played. Brown has been inconsistent. Gotta fix this mess in the offseason. Do what takes including kidnapping Scar.
Weren't we worried about the Cards blitzing, as one of the more competent aspects of their defense? And aren't screen passes a notorious way to punish a blitz-happy defense?

I mean, wtf do people want. Am I behind by 40 comments or is this just the super-basic reason for the screens that isn't being discussed?

Yep... People on-air & elsewhere talk about our "decimated" or "depleted" OL, but that's simply Not true. The Only missing member of the projected Week 1 starting line-up is Lose/Lose, who Sucks (at RT).

Our #1 personnel need this offseason is Left Tackle, and possibly Right Tackle depending on how much farther Trent Brown's slide continues.

I'd just like to say, for all the complaining about the coaching staff, and about BB's mediocre career record minus Brady. You know what? At least we have a coach who will always have us hovering around .500 at a minimum. He can't do it all himself as far as coaching goes though, and he has to employ the staff a bit better to put his players in a position to succeed. Let's not forget, Matt Patricia is ALSO the offensive line coach. The dude is doing two critical offensive jobs both for the first time. I don't really blame him for that. I blame BB for putting him in that position.

But again, that being said, without BB this team is absolute dog cheeks and we maybe are picking in the top 5. So let's be careful what we wish for with regards to coaching. BB's replacement may not mean we beat the bottom feeders of the NFL. It could mean we replace them.

And by the way for the surrender monkeys saying we have 0 chance against the Chiefs, should they arise in our future, that may be true provided that the scale by which we have "zero" chance also extends into some notion of negative probability, so that there is a falsely precise way to describe the chance the 2007 New York Giants had against the 18-0 New England Patriots... not to mention every team they beat to get the matchup.

You are big fluffy ****y cats.

I did not hear many complaints about the officials this game......was this crew one of the better ones ??
I have a complaint for Buck and Aikman, and that's that they didn't emphasize how insanely good of a non-call it was on the hit from (Marcus?) Jones on the TE. Absolute boom stick of a hit, and the TE looked shook, and the crowd was doing their "someone just died on the field" groan, but they didn't waver and made the right decision not to throw a flag there. It's so easy for refs to judge the result of the play and the reactions rather than what they actually saw. But I have never in my life been so impressed by a non-call as I was there. Give that ref a raise.

Definitely. We have a tendency to weep and wail and gnash our teeth about being around .500, without any apparent recognition that there's no law stating that the league must award us that many wins minimum.

Everybody is criticizing Matty P for a conservative game plan. At the beginning of the season I thought everyone agreed and expected a conservative, running game approach. Now it seems everyone wants a throw it deep, explosive game plan. The QB threw well this game, last game was not good. Plays called don't work usually because a player or players don't execute an assignment. One play flowed right Mac threw back to Rham, Andrews had position on Golden, didn't even slow him down and Rham dropped immediately with 20 yards open ahead of him. Good play call on third and long would have been successful. Later a play call to run right, AZ was overloaded to right, QB did not change play and ran right into defense. Mac was feisty last night and even during his press conference he had a more forceful demeanor than usual. I liked that. I didn't like his outburst on the field.

Yep, that was a ****ing HORRIBLE block by Andrews, who should've known better... He had the space, the leverage, and the ONLY block needed for a long run... Dam shame.

It was also the final play of the evening for Stevenson, who never, Ever EVER should've been allowed to return in the first place. Gross ****ing Negligence.

UPDATE-UPDATE-UPDATE: That wasn't his final play; that happened the series after next IIRC...

At worse if he dumps it to Harris here, there's a 5 yard pick up for a 3rd and 5 instead of a 3rd and 10. But you can see Mac's not set and he's already panicking. Missed opportunity.

i only watched the first quarter in relive so far but there were two plays which speak volume for mac's issues.

one play where henry was supposed to black cameron thomas (DE) who was rushing from the right side, mac was looking to the left so it was his blind spot on this situation but he should have a) anticipated that henry who is not a good blocker, can't block thomas for long and b) step up so that thomas can't reach mac's arm with his arm

Then there was a play where he had henry open for a moment or least a contested catch for a TE but instead he broke down under pressure just escaped and tried to run it, which resulted in 1 yard gain

--> Mac has happy feet under pressure, does not scan the field well under pressure /lacks the field vision and mac needs to go faster through his reads

Not sure it on Jones. He might deserve some of the blame, but not all of it. I don't see anyone open on that play other than Henry, who doesn't get open until after he is spun around by the defender and Jones is running to the right, and Harris, who slowed down his route to chip block the DE. It looks like the play was intended for the receiver on the left who ran right into the high safety rather than trying to avoid him or reroute towards the corner of the end zone where he would have been alone.

Jones might have been able to get the ball to Harris, but there was a lot of traffic between the two and it would have likely only been a short gain. With it being second down, you can make the case not to throw it there.

I just don't think there was an option in the end zone especially to who looked to be the intended primary receiver on that play.

Corky should've re-established his pocket, then re-evaluated the situation... Instead he did neither; he just stood there as if he were back at 'Bama, behind that OL, and waiting for his first-round receivers to break open...

I liked this quote:

>>At one point, you looked up and saw arguably the fastest skill group in years for New England: Nelson Agholor, Jonnu Smith, Thornton, Jones, and Strong. Speed, baby.

You could do a lot of damage with that set of players if they can get in synch. Could even have success throwing it underneath given all the receivers will likely be getting soft coverage and safeties will be far back.

Agholor Sucks, and JonNo & BoneyT are misused.

C'mon, even the best QBs will throw away the ball if no one is open on second and ten on the 12 yard line. But the primary receiver took himself out of the play. The other receivers were off screen. So it is unclear whether they were blanket covered.
again 0 passing TD against one of the worst defenses. This speaks volumes

Idk. It’s basically the same OL as last year, swapping out the declining Shaq Mason for the rookie Cole Strange. Any competent OL coach can block it up to mask player deficiencies, at least partially. Plays can be adjusted to give the QB more time to throw.

Want to give Mac more time? Add a blocker and/or execute better. Don’t use a complimentary play as a staple.

Too many misses weekly on O. :(

Why was McDermott double-teaming a slow DT instead of helping Double-H on the Edge?

And why were All Three route-runners on the same dam side of the field?

More Buffoonery from this offensive Offense.

The offense under unofficial play-caller Matt Patricia lacks imagination, downfield threats and continues to have three-play sequences leading to punts like this: stuffed run (first down), incomplete screen pass (second down), false start on an offensive tackle (Brown), and a third-and-14 play where they wave the white flag. For those that need more examples, try this one: stuffed run (first down), second down drop (Agholor), delay of game to make it third-and-15, and surrender on third down.

7. Patriots Offensive Line Continues to Hold Offense Back, Especially at Tackle
If you want the Patriots to push the ball downfield more, they need their offensive line to find its form. The Pats tackles, in particular, are having problems with technique. Overshooting their landmarks, getting off-balance in their pass sets, and throwing untimely cut blocks that need an explanation. Unfortunately, a sturdy solution might not be on this roster, making offensive tackle a major off-season priority - like a first-round pick-type priority.

this is all not MP. not being able to block is one thing but offensive line penalties are committed way too much by our offense during critical times,

I don't know what we have with this team, but it was good to see Tyquan, Pierre, and Marcus start to find offensive roles. I noticed that AZ gave Tyquan a LOT of space, though he blew it on the catch at the 10 when he stepped on the sideline - he needs to score on that play. Pierre Strong will see more time, and may be a big playmaker for us next year. Marcus, what can you say, he's amazing - just no more KO returns please.
I don’t see any of these RB as “big playmakers”, even Rhamondre Stevenson. Solid players but they don’t really move the needle like a stud receiver could.

again 0 passing TD against one of the worst defenses. This speaks volumes

They scored twice from the red zone. One was a three yard run right after a 39 pass play to Henry. The other was a 14 yard run. One field goal was off a third down play where Jones connected with Thornton, but Thornton stupidly stepped out of bounds at the four yard line before he picked up the first down.

Come on! Blame this play on Jones. It was clearly Jones' fault that Thornton couldn't see the first down marker right in front of him.

You can spin it any way you want for your agenda against Jones. You just make yourself look foolish.
