OT: Lou Merloni leaving afternoons on WEEI

I like Merloni, but I havent listened to WEEI in a couple years.

That's too bad. If they were going to move off of one of the men in that slot, it should have been Fauria.
He was the only one who actually brought analytical takes on issues. Depends on who they will replace him with.

They seem to think if they have a female on during their drive time shows that it will attract female listeners. Or maybe they think it will get TV viewers because guys can look at their faces when they pop up behind their monitors.

She is unlistenable. If they wanted to compete with 98.5 they'd bring in some serious talent that offers adult sports commentary a la New York sports radio.

WEEI has been frantically rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic for basically half a decade. They’re not gonna find some magic fix.
It’s headed downwards for a lot longer than that. They’ve never really managed to get back to the glory days before the SportsHub arrived and the only competition was 1510 the Zone.

Holley and Arnold didn’t generate great ratings.

Minihane and Callahan were the ratings juggernaut for WEEI. When those 2 said transgenders in womens college athletics wasn’t fair to the girls competing a high profile left wing guy went after them, calling all the stations advertisers, etc…The station didnt back them and the show blew up. Subsequently all the shows that followed tumbled as they didn’t have the juggernaut morning show lead in. It was basically the end of WEEI.
That was the LEAST of Callahan's odious remarks in the last years of his radio career. But blaming "the left" is all you can do. Callahan's show was hemorrhaging listeners by the time he left the air. Was that the left's fault too. God, sometimes I literally weep as some of the knee jerk responses I see here.

BTW- I will not miss Merloni a bit on any sport except baseball. I might be a solid addition to the radio booth, though my favorite would still be Eck

Not really sure what you are going on about. The Minihane Callahan show was the highest rated show on WEEI and was their only show consistently beating the sports hub. The transgender thing happened and the show imploded when the station didn’t back them.

Yes, Callahan’s show was hemorrhaging listeners but that was long after Minihane had left. Callahan was doing the show with Mut at that point.

Here’s how the ratings played out before Kirk & Callahan dissolved. WEEI would kill for these ratings now.

Listening to Merloni was always painful for me, it seemed that he wanted to be very much like Felger/Bertram instead of an intelligent analyst/host.. most of the sports talk show are so focused on conspiracy theories and negative talk find them unlistenable, thank goodness for Pandora. I remember when they were chock full of really good info, not so much now.

Oh I know that 98.5 has been beating them to death since about 2012 but they’ve only really started to realize they’re in a death spiral more recently.

Ehh.... The sports hub is proof that Pitino was right about Boston sports fans being a fellowship of the miserable.

Exactly. I have no idea what is the love fest about with Sports Hub. I don't find many of the hosts good at all. People complain about weei. But the midday show at the sports hub is boring as hell. Never was a Toucher and Rich fan, I have grown tired of Felger and Mazz's stitch along Adam Jones as well. Murry is pretty much the only one I like and i wish someone would give me his own show or partner him up with someone on the weekdays, instead of just the weekends.

Callahan and Minihane was never gonna last although yes they were kicking Toucher and Rich's a**. But they weren't gonna last much longer, especially the way Gerry is now and Minihane loved to talk about everything but sports as well. They both are where they should be at this point.

They certainly cater to at audience. I cannot stand it. Both stations have lost me. I will grab a podcast here and there on Spotify but that's about it.

Does anyone consistently listen EEI?

It's amazing how far EEI has fallen in the last 20 years.
They were the name brand in Boston sports radio when I was younger. Now it just seems like a bunch of guys trying to play up a shtick but missing the fact it is supposed to be entertainment. Felger and Mazz, and to a lesser extent, Zo and Beetle have their shticks but they are at least entertaining. Something will happen in Boston sports or a game will go a certain way and I will make sure to tune into Felger and Mazz just because I want to hear their reaction/how they twist it. The EEI guys I just generally roll my eyes because it comes off as a bunch of meatheads that generally never articulate a point. I don't always agree with a lot of the guys on 98.5 but at least it is mindless entertainment.

I stopped WEEI a long time ago, don't like Felger and Mazz, only show I listen to, and watch is Zo and Bertrand.

I will never forgive him for that Chauncey Billups trade.

Yep... Sucks for all of us that he didn't get Duncan; but If he had at least drafted (EDIT: And Kept) Billups & Tracy McGrady instead of Billups & Ron Mercer then he still would've been off to a Much better start with the Rebuild... But there were more awful draft picks & terrible trades to follow anyway, so...

But yeah let's blame the actual supporters of the team who correctly refused to pretend that the emperor was wearing clothes, Ricky.

**** him AND everyone who thinks like him.
