Right, they are trading away future draft picks that let you pick some of the best prospects in the draft and then lock them in to below-market deals for five years, in exchange for known talent levels that come with top-of-market price tags. It's the kind of thing you do if you think your window is opening, because you are trading future benefit (those cheap high end prospects with long contracts) for current benefit (talented but very expensive players that may end up getting cut after you pay them their guaranteed money). If MIA gets this wrong, they end up with a few high priced stars playing alongside a bunch of scrubs, with no way to turn it around for several years.Well, and they’re paying somewhere in the ballpark of $50M per year extra.
