Zappe's Stats Through Three Games

I certainly did not expect over 30 attempts and 300 yards (and multiple passing TDs) from Mr Zappe today.
Cle’s run D…

Mac has a year as an NFL starter & Zappe is a rookie. Their college play is relevant. He shows all the traits that an NFL QB should have: poise, confidence, fast processing, good decisions, protect the ball & accuracy. Zappe is the better passer despite having less experience. That is crystal clear.
No it isn’t crystal clear. Not sure why the Brady Boys all fell in love with Zappe, probably had more to do with Tompa not doing well so they have to deflect. I hope Zappe continues to be amazing, but before I declare him the second coming I hope to see him do well against a mediocre defensive team. So far he has looked great against two of the worst defenses in the league who were both missing defensive starters from their already bad defenses. There isn’t any hurry here, let’s enjoy the fun and see where they both are come December.

It’s not like Mac faced great defenses. Miami, Pittsburgh and Baltimore are all in the bottom 3rd of the league in term of defenses so Mac couldn’t even look good against that.

Mac has played 21 games in his career (regular season + playoffs) and has thrown 20 picks. For a guy who his greatest assets are supposed to be accuracy, reading defenses and decision making. It’s not great.

For now Mac is looking more like Mayfield 2.0 than the guy for the next 5 years.

Mac has not been good this year, but let's not discount his last year. 22tds as a rookie and lead the team to the playoffs

This is the logical post. But for some reason if you just suggest that Mac Jones is going to come back as starter you get attacked. It's not to say Mac is the answer and zappe isn't but just we need to slow our roll.

If Mac Jones comes back and continues to look how he did first three weeks then bill will think about a change. But the ball is in Mac's court. He's 100% going to be given a chance to take the reigns back.

Now I'm literally reading people suggesting the locker room likes zappe better so you have to bench Mac...it's getting ridiculous. And I like zappe!

That is it, I like them both and want them both to be amazing. The rest is foolishness, my guess is right now a bunch of teams are wishing they had drafted qb's differently than they did the last two years.

I just double-checked those statistics and there are some issues here.

71 total passes thrown, but only 70 total in the per-down breakdown.
71 total passes thrown, but 73 total in the per-half breakdown.

In the total breakdown, 51/71 is not a 72.9% completion percentage; it's 71.8%.

In the per-half breakdown, 26/36 is not a 78.8% completion percentage; it's 72.2%.

I wonder if they did one of those Draft do-overs whether Zappy would now go higher i.e. maybe second round. Certainly already elevated himself over other mid-rounders like Malik Willis and Sam Howell.

When I read stuff like, "Let's be clear. This is still Mac Jones' team" (today's column), I think I am entitled to hear why...exactly. Those holding this view CERTAINLY cannot point to the facts, to the data, to make their point. Zappe has by any rational measure clearly outplayed Mac this year. So why? Gimme an answer, and be specific, as the ol' school marm used to say. Be Specific.

And excuses don't count.

The defense scored TDs in the last two games and delivered 4 turnovers yesterday. How much of Zappe's "success" can be attributed to that? He is playing well, but he held the ball a little long a few times and his grounding call costs the Pats a sure FG. He needs to be mindful of the situation and should have thrown the ball away there.

Remember Cleveland just scored to make it 24-15 and the Pats went three and out.

Then Cleveland muffed the punt and the rout was on.

But this game could have easily went south if the Garrett strip sack went backwards instead of forward (and the defense didn't stop Cleveland on downs), or Cleveland catches that punt, or Henry's guy doesn't fall down.

I thought the draw call for the first TD was Brillant, you could see they intended to let Garrett rush upfield and go in behind him.

Mac was making some bad throws no doubt, also he had some bad breaks. Neither QB has come through in the clutch yet. That is when you really know something. I'm waiting for either Mac or Zappe to be the reason the Pats win a game, not the reason they didn't lose it.

Cue John Madden, "What Tom Brady just did gave me goosebumps"

To be fair to Mac he was on pace for the OROY award last year until a bad end. Yes, it's also been a slow start this season but perhaps in Bills mind Mac has still done enough over a longer period to get a chance to win his job back. I'm not really bothered who the QB is as long as it's the best man for the job.

So the defense's good play with Zappe at qb caused Mac to throw multiple interceptions? Are you nuts?

How much longer before all the Tompa Bay forum contributors migrate back over here and become Patriot's fans again?

I haven't seen anyone get attacked. Definitely plenty of passionate discussion and excitement about our newfound qb dilemma. Actually, now that I think about it, it's almost been too civil, wtf is wrong with you people!!

All I can say is Mac better watch out. Shyt Zappens.

Here's what I think is Mac's saving grace compared to Drew.

1) Belichick drafted Mac. He had no attachment to Drew.

2) More importantly, 2001 was Drew's 9th season in the NFL. The book was already in on his strengths and weaknesses. Mac has one season and a very small part of another to base any evaluation on.

Unless Belichick feels very strongly about what he's seen from Zappe, Mac's going to have to fall flat on his face for a full season before he'd be replaced.
Exactly BB

Mac is back for the Bears. BB wont give up on his prize draft pick like that. Wynn is still here and he stinks. BB gave that slug his 4th year option money. Harry was on the team a week prior to his 4th training camp.

Nor should bill give up on his "prize draft pick" yet.

Mac had a great rookie year followed by a rough 1-3 start. You give him an opportunity. If he doesn't improve you have zappe waiting.
