OT: Thinking of those who live on the West Coast of Florida

The advice to people in evacuation zones is NOT to travel long distances, but rather to go to open shelters within your own county. When winds exceed 40 mph, bridges and overpasses will be closed, so you don't want to be on the roads then.

Thanks for this. That really hit home with me. I fully embrace the idea that we should unite to preserve the various forms of life on this planet. At least the life that can be turned into tasty food and will eventually take the journey through my digestive system. Couldn't care less about the rest.
Commendable

We are now even more happy our younger son moved here to Jax... and bought in a no flood zone. We will probably stay with him for a couple days, mainly for Mrs Rover's peace of mind.

But a little for mine.

You have to be also concerned with sink holes. The flooding over limestone which that area of Florida is full of is another danger that Ian can exacerbate.

Famous last words... but I'm not that concerned about that for us. Our house was built in 1910... and it's two houses from the river. I think if anything could have sunk here, by now, it would have.

Yeah, I hope you're instincts are right. Stay safe oldrover.

North Fort Myers now in the hurricane zone. Ugh. Everyone is staying home for now.

I left late in the afternoon yesterday to drive to St. Petersburg, which is 3+ hours each way after my son's college waited until the last minute to decide to shut down the campus completely - and the dorms - telling the kids they had to be out by 9am this morning. We were initially going to let him stay before the storm decided to make the turn as he's in a new concrete facility with built-in hurricane shutters and the cafeteria is in the same building. But now that it's going to make more of an impact, they decided to tell the kids they had to get out. I didn't get back until after 1am and I'm definitely dragging today.
Wait, you're actually in Florida? WTF. Get out dude. Ian's aren't welcome here (at least until Friday).

Landfall predicted between Ft Meyers & Naples. That's 2-3 hours south of Tampa, so they should be fine.

Steve Balestrieri is in that vicinity, and a few others in here too I believe - so it's still not awesome. Would be great to see it move out to sea a little more and shear a bit and weaken before making landfall.

Just got an hour of raining cats and dogs, with tornado warnings. Calmed off for now. Impressive chunks of rain for sure. These outer bands are pretty impressive, with a storm 200 miles away

The eye predicted to be passing well south of Tampa is very good for storm surge in Tampa Bay, as the counter-clockwise rotation will mean that prevailing winds there will be from the East, pushing water out of, rather than into, the Bay.

Opposite for Ft. Myers perhaps

I have been to Naples quite a few times on vacation so I have an idea of the land layout. Hope all you guys remain safe.

Hopefully everyone is up to date with the storm so that they can stay safe. I hate hurricane season. I don’t know how people deal with it every year. Personally I’d have a hard time considering ever moving to Florida and having to worry about massive hurricanes.

Just watched the Naples Beach Pier Webcam and there is quite a sea running South to North I think

Right now it's a Category 4 storm at 155 MPH, on the brink of Category 5. It's too late to evacuate it would seem.

Far reaching effects from Ian. Delray Beach just south of us in WPB.
