Patriots Training Camp- Monday August 8th

It's still relatively early, but the Pats can't rely on the "Oh september is warm-up" mantra anymore. This ain't the Goat the leading us out there, we need everything possible.

We gotta put some stuff in perspective though: Not bringing an Offensive Coordinator (or a Offensive Consultant at the very least), with real experience on the job, for a Sophomore QB led offense , while transitioning to a new phylosophy entirely without a single outside hire (former coaches don't count here) IS... risky. I know some folks here are running on hopes, but betting this whole season's chips on "growth" is something only the GoaT Coach could entertain, on this "Win-now" league.

And I won't even dwell on the fact that our coaching staff is overall inexperienced, "incestuous" (as in, everyone has experience only within the house system) and, for those who do have outside experience, it's either small, or in failed ventures. Oh, and we have of the smallest coaching staff in the league. To close it all off, nepotism.

So, anyway, I've said it before, but I'll say again: This season is gonna be a real surprise. Here's hoping Barmore is a future HoF'er

Reiss missed this article that came out in the Herald today. This is a LONG Article.

"
I’d say we were as good a team at running the outside zone to the open side, the non-tight end side, as anybody in football,” said Scarnecchia. “And we were good at running it to the tight end side when we had a good enough tight end to block it – Rob Gronkowski. So we ran it.

“We ran it out of two-back sets a lot with Sony Michel (in 2018). … We ran toss-crack, we ran outside zone, we ran the gap runs inside, whatever we felt like we could do, we did.”

If they ran the stuff with Brown, Andrews, and Wynn in the past, is the issue with Strange and Onwenu?

So maybe the offense finds a groove sometime in october?

On the optimistic side (crossing fingers), the defense balls out until we have a semblance of an offense.
Offense has been an issue for 3 years Sadly I'm not sure we can even evaluate the defense based on how much they work this offense. The line has been spotty since Scarnecchia left (and honestly even in his last year, but you can chalk some of that up to injuries), the WR's have been issue as long and really we are kinda banking on Algholor, Parker, and Smith to step up for the offense to be any better than last year in the passing game. We have good backs, but none of them are superstars that can carry a team or succeed inspite of a spotty offensive line. Hopefully Mac takes a big step this year and doesn't hit a sophmore slump, because last year it felt like Belichick had him on a bit of a leash and we simply can't compete like that anymore.

The two minute drill is always a salve that fixes what ails... but it can't be an every down offense. Sometimes the game plan calls for the offense to slow it down, dink&dunk... two minute offense is feast or famine.

If you don't convert first downs or incur penalties you leave the field really fast and put your winded defense back out on the field. But in spurts it takes the thinking out of the players heads and just lets them play, maybe this is the problem offensively... they're thinking too much. I thought the idea was to simplify things?

Strange used zone blocking in college.

I'd just say last year was more of the same, they were running their typical man blocking scheme and Patricia was nowhere to be seen. They fired one of their offensive line coaches because he wouldn't get the jab and to start the season it was a clusterfck. Players missing assignments, missed blocks, false starts...

They put Ted Karras in there, not because they needed an injection of talent, but because they needed another coach on the field... another guy who knew the reads and line calls. After the Giants game we'll have a better idea of what this simplified offense will look like, but they'll also know and decide whether to scrap it or not.

If we are trading a WR...let it be Agholor. Keep Meyers (also Thornton had another good day)...

I think it was more the league terminated the Contract since it was who mandated that NFL Coaching Staffs had to be vaccinated. Firing Cole Popovich was a huge mistake.

I further mentioned what Dante said about the outside zone blocking. I also have been worried since they didn't bring in a dedicated guy for the offensive line. I didn't want to put all the blame on Bricillo since Yates had worked with Lions and Patricia the previous year. But at some point we have to start questioning whether he can coach up the players on the O-line the way that is needed. They cut Corwin Brown after 1 season way back when. Guglielmo only last for 2 years after Dante's 1st retirement.

Scar first retired 9 freaking years ago at some point you can’t keep hoping he’ll work some magic to bail the team out somehow.
True. You have to hope the Pats can get someone who can actually coach the O-line.

I know that someone mentioned that the Pats had 3 guys who worked with him, but things seem to have regressed further, so far. I'm not panicking yet, but it's not trending in the right direction.

Maybe Offensive line repetitions is what's needed but how long do you go with that? All the starters are vets there except for Strange....so knowing that can they keep trying to work it out for another 2 weeks before they switch back to Gaps?

Maybe Bill never had the idea to use Zone 100% of the time and only use it against certain opponents.

Every tweet I see tonight is complaining about the offense as if it's the worst performance in training camp history.
