Bill Belichick sees "dramatic improvement" in Mac Jones

Patriots players have spent the offseason noting the improvement that they've seen in quarterback Mac Jones as he heads into his second season and the team's head coach weighed in on the subject on Tuesday.

Belichick says that he has seen “dramatic improvement” in the 2021 first-round pick since the end of his rookie season.

“Everyone recognizes how well he prepares and how much further along he [is] than a year ago,” Belichick said, via Tom Curran of NBCSportsBoston.com.

I think Mac will have a Top 10-12 QB year. He has talented RBs and TEs (yes, Smith is talented). The WRs are proven, NFL pass-catchers and there is upside in the group in Thornton. Assuming health, at worst the O-line will be functional.

Add to that his intelligence, confidence , experience in the system and improved physical condition.

I think the additions of Wilson, Peppers, Butler, and Mills will help a lot...not saying we are going to be a top 5 D or anything but maybe good enough to win some games.

Right — I mean, certainly BB talks about improvement and does try to pump his players up in press conferences from time to time, but he went above and beyond what was needed in response here. This has put a smile on my face and is making me very optimistic,

Where did you have him at the end of last season?

Then, consider someone like BB who knows a little bit about football and who doesn't often complement his own players saying he's made a dramatic improvement?

It's all subjective, so we can all come up with whatever criteria we want, but I'm thinking the window is more like top 8-10 rather than 10-12.

I like to consider things like age and salary maybe more than others, and am feeling some of the people that have been on the list for a long time are gonna take a step or two back and leave some room for Mac to move up.

Anyway, LFG! I'm ready for some football!

Wilson was actually really good his rookie year. He had two injury prone years the following two, but he was actually effective when he was on the field those two years. He just couldn't stay on it. If he can stay healthy, I think he could be a lot better than people think and might be able to build on that rookie season.

I also think if Uche can stay healthy, he could be a stud. I think last year had more to do with injuries. He was a stud the first two games and got injured near the end of game two and then missed game three and was never the same after that including a stint on IR.

Although I don't put a lot of stock in Belichick's press conferences or really much that comes out of training camp, but I am damn encouraged how Jones retooled his body and worked on his mechanics in the offseason.

Good, now the team around him needs to execute and block well… that will determine how good the offense can be.

According to this video they had one of the highest scoring rates in the NFL when they didn’t make a mistake… the offensive line and weapons made too many mistakes.

False starts, missed blocking assignments, fumbles, penalties… there were way too many. And while this doesn’t necessarily need repeating… Mac was a rookie starting QB.

If they can play more mistake free, better executed football I assume they can do a lot better than 6th most points scored. It will be up to the defense at that point to carry their side of the couch.

Despite all the errors and memories of Mac taking hard hits, especially early in the season, some surprising stats include the offense being ranked 3rd in the league in fewest sacks and 9th in sack percentage which is probably more accurate a measure. They had the 5th best completion percentage and 7th best yards per completion.

There’s a lot to build upon with Mac in year two. Raise his TD percentage, faster WR’s will probably help that, and lower his INT percentage, a lot of those weren’t his fault as much as they were a product of not being on the same page as his weapons… experience. Same with many false start penalties by the OLine, how many of those were an unfamiliarity with Mac’s cadence or his lack of command?

I think if they can stay healthy and block well this will be a very explosive offense… in fact I don‘t see how it won’t be if those things happen.
