And, We Have Our Offense

Having receiver depth will also make sure that there are enough practice bodies to help the new QB develop without taxing the starters too much.

One concern - and maybe it's been addressed - will Parker "get it"? Does he adjust to the new playbook and offensive complexities?

I hope he does - we need a true #1 and he does fit the bill. His presence will also help out Agholor as well as the slot guys.

Technical question for anybody: Is the offense still the famously complex one that was here with Brady? Playbook, scheme, speed, etc. I watched all the games, but don't know my x's and o's as well as many of you.

Truth is, I keep forgetting we have Parker. Reason is, because this would've been great 4 years ago. I'm just not sure how much more he can provide than Meyers. 1st year in the system might look like Agholor did last year, and Agholor should be better this year. However, they need to get Thornton involved sooner than Patriots normally look to rookie WR's. So, I'm just not sure where all the snaps come from. I think Parker is insurance for Agholor, and whichever provides more will play. I still think Bourne & Meyers will play most - then we'll see who develops quickest chemistry with Mac. One thing is for sure, Parker doesn't provide what Thornton does.

You asking if they ran the same complex offense with a rookie as they ran with mid-late career Brady? You don't need to know any x's and o's to figure that answer.

Last year the Pats had the 9th best offense in the league by DVOA (7th in rush, 10th in passing). I expect them to improve both numbers and jump into the 5-8 range offensively.

I expect the biggest areas of improvement to be at QB (second year of Mac), WR (Parker is an upgrade and I'm hopefully Agholor is better in year 2), Tight End (I'd be shocked if they didn't get more out Jonnu than they did last year) and Oline (The offensive line had issues when Brown and Wynn were hurt, hopefully they are healthier this year and the time their back ups got last will improve their play if they have to step in).

No, Parker's the big dog and the others are supporting cast. He's gonna be awesome, and by pushing everyone else down they become better too.

Offense as a whole looks better everywhere, except for 2 things to watch: how quickly Strange and Onwenu settle in, and how the new playcaller/OC situation develops. I don't see much from James White for at least the first half of the season, but Pierre Strong could really take on that role well.

I guess that we shouldn't see much improvement at RB with Stevenson in his second season and with the return of White. (and even adding a rookie as an upgrade to Taylor,

Yeah, re-reading my post I think it came off more aggressive than I wanted. I think it would probably be unrealistic to expect improvement for every offensive group but RB. I should have said those are the areas most likely to see improvement.

I thought Harris and Stevenson were really good last year (minus Harris' fumbles to start the season). I see RB as one position where the status quo from last year would be OK for me.

One non positional area that was a problem last year was chunk plays for the offense. Strong is certainly a guy who could help with that from the RB position.

Curious to revisit this thread after seeing some interesting takes on Meyers being the definitive #4 if assuming all are relatively healthy

James White might not play at all. We had to pick a 3rd down back if JJ Taylor is not going to play much. If Strong can run a few routes and catch, his speed will be great. White was never much of a runner.

If we do, then it's still Not Good Enough... Certainly not as improved as it could've been after this weekend that's for dam sure.
You are on your own in your opinions on the Offense.

Most agree that we chose not to address enough issues on Defense, leaving that for future signings.

My opinion is Not that they didn't draft enough offensive players...

It's that they chose the Wrong offensive players with those picks.

So if history guides us, it is "pick four" from
  • Myers
  • Bourne
  • Agholor
  • Parker
  • Thornton
That's tough with Parker's injury history. Hmmm.
