DRAFT Cole Strange-Welcome to the Pats

See how many IOL get drafted through 54 and we will get a better idea about if he would have been available at 54. I like the pick and love the fact they got a 3 &4 by trading down..

Indefensible for where they picked him. Just once couldn't they trade up to get the guy they wanted? Lions traded up from 32 to 12 to get Jameson Williams.

By all accounts, the Patriots have the fewest draftable players on their board in the league on a consistent basis…one year it was as low as 80 players. They probably had 12 to 15 players with rd 1 value/grades this year (their system isn’t round-based per se). After those guys are gone they just take their favorite guys (the player and the fit for their system), regardless of where non-expert draft experts have them ranked OR where other teams have them ranked. We ended up being very glad that they didn’t care about public perception with the Mankins and Vollmer picks.

Also teams likely know approximately where most players are going to be picked (give or take a few spots) and, if you believe Bill, they didn't think he was going to last until 54. If you love the player, why take the chance?

The reaction was the same but back then we had fans who appreciated the success and rooted for the team so it was tempered compared to the reaction of the current fan base which is largely patriots haters who revel in criticizing the team.
They're not Patriots haters they're Belichick haters -- and Brady lovers. But some do root against the Patriots because they fear that Belichick having success without Brady will challenge their Brady >> Belichick canon.

Nice try cherry-picking the player who fits your negative agenda. Classic tactic by the go-negative or go-home crew here.

Marpet, Mathis, Thuney….I hear that those guys are/were decent.
You're the one cherrypicking. And you also don't know me and seem to pay no attention to the way I post, one of the biggest Belichick boosters here, but you felt right at home insulting me. I'll keep it in mind

I'm off this thread now that any criticism is Belichick hate.

I'm one of the biggest Belichick boosters, but since this is now turning into a total non-sense thread, have at it.

Quite sensitive, you are.

People really gotta stop using draftnik boards as if teams just use those and don't have their own. You have no clue if he would have been there at 54 or 85. Most of all of those same draftnik boards that have Strange as a Day 2 pick had Green & Johnson going in the mid-to-late 20s, yet they went in the teens. Some even had them going in the 2nd. So right there it shows you the board was different for teams and draftniks on G.

If you do a look around most of these draftnik sites the pure G, (not college OTs that project as G in the NFL) the rankings layout like this for G

Green
Johnson
Parham
Strange

So if the Pats top priority was getting a G then their choices were Parham or Strange (Parham vs Strange is another discussion). That's a risky decision to pass on a G you really like because some dude on his laptop thought he'd be there 30-60 picks later.
Just see the remaining players on the board . There are at least 20 players significantly at a better value than the guard. How many GMs today overreach. If you notice the trend , all other GMs are playing according to script.

If that is the case why would strange not be there in 54 or say 48 . You could have traded up at that point giving limited draft capital instead of overreaching by 20 draft positions.

And what every one is saying is that a G should not have mattered more. The G position will not be the difference between a SB or not. Lacking top end talent on the defensive side of the ball will on the other end.

I am sure we will all be happy to have cole strange next year when this defense will get destroy by Allen, Hill and waddle next year.

weird that cinci sure did devote some off season capital to OL upgrades, after falling short last season despite a slew of offensive talent?

Here's the thread for when Thuney was drafted. It's a funny read, because pretty much all of the same complaints and arguments are made there as are being made here. Thuney ended up being pretty good, at least in my opinion! Seemed like the Pats knew what they were doing.

This should be positioned right next to the posted pants-pissing upon Thuney's departure. Karras was whined about. Mason was whined about. Both upon arrival and departure. Strange is the newest future FA loss to lament. Stay tuned.

Unfortunately, yesterday was like Christmas to the Belichick Haters Club. Whether they are part of the Brady over Patriots crowd or just think Bill lost it or whatever, they all were hoping that Bill would trade down and then reach for a player at a position that a majority of people don't see as one of the biggest priorities. A lot of this has nothing to do with the selection or the player and more about another chance to pile on Bill.

And before I am jumped on for this post, I am not saying everyone is piling on Bill today are part of this group, but the usual suspects are here and some are doing the most piling on.
Bullcrap. This pick was so out-of-left-field that neither ESPN nor NFLN had any footage or synopsis ready to show on the guy. He is the only first rounder that we did not see any highlights of or pictures of. ESPN's entire review of him consisted of one single sentence.

No that's not the case. I am a belichick supporter and this draft was overreach, a shocker of gigantic proportions which needs to be called out and panned out .

Belichick is smart , but this is not a smart move. This is terrible.. and a travesty for most of pats fans...

It's so weird that last year he gets credit for basically doing nothing and Jones falling to him. It's not like they pulled an Andy Reid and called their shot and moved up significantly for QB, they didn't care if they got Jones or not but were happy to get him if he fell. This year they HAD to draft an older guard in the first in fear of losing him.

Did you read my last paragraph? I said it wasn't everyone who is piling on Belichick today. There are just a group who shows up every time Belichick makes an unpopular move.

31 reps at the combine is nothing to sneeze at. He's not exactly weak. Maybe the draftniks mean leg strength?

Kenyon Green did 20 reps. Zion did 32.

Bad Bill is back in the house. You know, I really want someone to draft for us like they’re not trying to show they’re smarter than everyone else.
We all had the same reaction to Mankins, McCourty and they turned out okay. Trust the process.

The people criticizing Matt Millen - uh I mean Bill Belichick - this morning extends far beyond the usual group.
