Patriots Player Departure Shaq Mason traded to the Bucs

Can anyone explain why the pats are protecting 2023 cap space with Mac, Barmore & Judon signed longterm? They aren’t going to be extending much if any of the 2019 draft class either.

This approach is bizarre.
Here’s a potential explanation. Not saying it’s true or I believe this is the right approach, but a thought.

They know the team wasn’t fully ready to compete in 2021 and did as well as they could. They think they’re still in the middle of a rebuild and expect 2022 to look like 2021. Rather than use the 2023 cap space now when it might only get them one more win, they could be targeting 2023 as the all-in date when their rebuild is complete, and will therefore go all out at that time. Similar to how the Pats won in 2001 but took a step back in 2002 as some of the older vets they signed for the prior year declined, before exploding thereafter with a couple of big drafts and bringing in Rodney, Washington and Colvin from the outside.

I think this signals another move is coming to the oline. Perhaps a tackle via trade with a big contract.

Just spitballing a theoretical possibility:

Collins and Brown at tackle
Owenu and Wynn at guard
Andrews at center
i still would rather have traded wynn than mason due to availability

I have a feeling they'll let Brown walk. We'll see...

I certainly could live with that assuming Collins and Brown can stay healthy.

At least we're helping Brady in his pursuit of Ring No. 8.

The big difference here is that this is a buyers market - this is the last big bargain year - if you save for next yr you lose value.

With Brown, Wynn and Collins, they'd have to make damn sure that they were confident in the backups.

I'm really not here for another first round o-lineman

Worst move
We need 2 new o line starters and they better be reliable
Onwenu needs to step up as well
When you look at other contracts in this year FA period for Guards Mason‘s hit was ok
You presume that Belichick will be willing to pay what the overpaying horde paid in the firs 2 days of free agency.

They’d have to get backups first.
