Player Signing Devin McCourty resigned on 1 year deal.

It's a guarantee that most of the contract will be signing bonus. That way they can push 2/3 of it out and reduce McCourty's cap number. My guess is the Vet Minimum for someone with his service 6M in SB and then the rest in incentives.
Yeah, I'm thinking 2022 salary around $1M and $6M signing bonus spread across '22 through '24 plus $2M in incentives (which I'll assume for now are NLTBE), makes his 2022 cap hit around $5M (so a cap savings of $1M or so) and then '23 hit of around $4M and then '24 around $4M again, which of course will accelerate in '23 when he's gone like it would've this year, but for about $8M dead money. However as I said before, I bet they'd rather keep him this year, save a little bit of money while they're tight-ish to the cap, and then take the dead money hit a year later for slightly more when they have 10 times more cap space.

$1.1 million is the minimum for a vet with McCourty’s service time. DaBruinz accused me of pulling figures out my butt. He’s the expert on arses as his nose is up Bill’s all the time. I’m sorry if it’s too hard for you to look such stuff up on the internet.

They should have spent the $9 mil elsewhere. They have much bigger needs than bringing back a player who is not going to make the team any better. I would think they could draft a safety who's not physical, can't tackle, and can't cover. Because that's pretty much what McCourty is at this point.

Veteran, Team Captain, leader of the secondary... here's what that looks like:

I doubt you have ever played this game before, but last I checked, defenses were composed of 11 players that have to operate as a cohesive unit.

Wasn't McCourty's dead cap number something around $6 million? So if the cap logistics mean his current hit is less than the $9 million he signed for, isn't that, like, a free player?

If the new money is spread to 2023 and beyond, when the cap explodes, or there are NLTBE incentives, we might increase our cap space while signing him. Better than a free player.

Perhaps, but his mindset is that every one of those 11 is single-handedly responsible. Saves a lot of effort in pausing to think about things.

That's all we need him for.

That’s fair! His command of the secondary in our defense is probably second to only bb!

Clearly he knows more than either of the nepotists!

He is signed through 2024 with the voidable years that won’t be voided now. So they can spread out any signing bonus over three years along with that $6.5 million of dead money they already have.

My guess is that the Pats might have signed him for the veteran minimum and the rest being a signing bonuses and NLTBE bonuses. That might bring his current cap number down about $500k-$1 million or so.

When the team's winning we hear about the culture, and the locker room, and the importance of veteran leadership... when they lose it's all 11 players equally responsible?? McCourty's not a good player anymore and all the supposed intangibles aren't going to change that.

The team needs to get better, actually much better, as those drive charts vs Buffalo indicate. Resigning McCourty doesn't make them better.

First, we don't know how much the contract is actually worth, or how the CAP is spread out (he would have been 6+ on the CAP this year if not re-signed). Initial contract reports are never reliable, and almost always make the number look higher than it actually is.

Second, McCourty is not a top-10 safety anymore, maybe not top-20, but even if it was $9 million flat (doubt it) he's not paid like a top-10 safety. And his value to the Pats is much higher than it would be on the open market, I think.

So let's see what the contract really is. The Pats are in a youth movement, but that doesn't mean you can your locker-room leaders. McCourty should see fewer snaps this year. Keep those legs fresher, but he adds a ton of value to this team.

I'm just happy for DMac.

A vet who can’t play anymore and who shows up as a consistent liability on film review by the best in the business in that area wouldn’t be asked to play nearly 95% of the defensive snaps by the ultimate “what have you done for me lately” coach. That tells me that some of McCourty’s supposed “bad plays” were likely due to poor execution on the part of others. BB knows everyone’s responsibilities on every play. We are only guessing.
