Who will be the new OC?

I liked the serenity McD had around Mac. Id hope for something similar - so yeah, no need for hysteria like BOB et al
BOB has some plusses. Granted he hasn't worked with Mac on a daily basis, but it was reported that Mac actually taught BOB the Alabama offense. And we know that BOB likes the 2 TE sets. The down side is whether or not BOB can check his ego to work for BB again.

Agreed. I wouldn't hate an OB reunion but yea I have the same concern about the mesh of personalities on a day to day basis.

Bill loves seeing how guys work together. Which traits come out and stand out. Who works well with together and handles new responsibilities. We still have a few good coaches in Covington & Mayo on the defensive side too.
All the coaches are “developed”. They are tested with more responsibility each year. It’s not a coordinator/dictator system, all the assistants are involved in game planning responsibilities, playing time decisions, etc.

Yes they would be able to. That seems like a reasonable move. Who knows what'll happen though. Could just as likely be Troy Brown or Mick Lombardi or some kind of joint effort. I just don't want this to derail Mac's development - that was my main reason for wanting McDaniels to stay.
Brown only has 3 years coaching experience. Lombardi only has 2 seasons as a WR coach and 1 as the Asst. QB coach.

This is why I'm hoping that McDaniels moves to hire Steve as his DC.. I would really like to see Mayo as the DC.
Man Josh would be taking one for the team imo lol

I'm pulling for Josh though. He strikes me as a little bit of a nut taking this job but I'll root for him. I truly don't get the Josh hate around here. I've yet to hear a solid argument why he sucks or w/e but that's kind of par for the course with those things. Very few can actually explain anything in detail but the hate was over the top. For a guy who was always sought after among NFL circles and hired/rehired by Bill multiple times.

He's got an uphill battle in Vegas though. What a climb that is.

OBrien came to NE (first nfl job) as an Offensive Assistant in 2007 was WR coach in 2008 and QB Coach de facto OC in 09.
Lombardi came to NE as an Asst QB Coach in 2019 and was WR coach in 20-21.
Almost an exact parallel, though OBrien had college coordinator experience but Lonbardi has 9 years NFL experience ( plus 2 in scouting in NE)

Lombardi clearly looks like the guy being groomed for the role so far.

Joe Brady would also help Mac Jones develop.....

Brady coached Joe Burrow from an interesting transfer QB to the #1 overall NFL Draft pick. As the WR coach and passing game coordinator under OC Steve Ensminger, Brady brought in a modern, spread out, pro style approach to a boring LSU offense that had underachieved for decades. The LSU offense that once couldn’t produce with Odell Beckham Jr and Jarvis Landry became the greatest offense in College Football history, even if only for a year.

Agree, except he coached wide receivers. Not sure that position has really come together in the last two years.

Meyers grew into an effective receiver. Bourne did well. We got a lot out of Byrd in 2020.

It‘s not clear to me what Lombardi did well enough to improve the position and be named OC. One reason may be that he didn’t have much to work with.

It’s not a matter of that, it’s a matter of progression through the coaching staff.
Do you think OBrien improved the 2007 receiver group so much in 2008 that it was why he got “promoted”?

We need to do whatever it takes to give Mac the best chance for success.
I think that would obviously be to keep the system the same, keep the philosophy the same and just change up the guy executing the plan.
