OT Sean Payton "stepping away"

Retiring at least for now.

I think the Dallas job is Payton's if he wants it. The Cowboys would be a legitimate NFC power if he ends up there and Jerry stays out of the way.

for contractual reasons he’ll probably need to take a year or more off but he’ll be back on a better team ASAP.

Very interesting, because he's not that old (58) compared to guys like Belichick, Carroll, and Arians, who are still having some success around 70. If it's to retire, I wonder if it would be temporary. He's one of the best coaches in the league.

Intersting...would Jerry have the guts to fire McCarthy and hire him? Dallas would instantly become the favorite in the NFC with Rodgers likely leaving GB and Brady leaving TB...

More evidence it's going down, from The Athletic's Saints writer.

I wonder if San Fran or the Rams have an opinion on your take of who the favorites are.

let’s be honest…SF is a hot team right now that probably should have lost to GB. The Rams are really good but if Payton goes to Dallas they become the NFC favorites

Interesting timing. He had 3 years left on a 5 year deal. Maybe he is burnt out and needed some time or maybe he didn't want to deal with an iffy QB situation

He's retiring... this scuttle butt went around a bit ago, but I gave it no credence,,, so this is mildly surprising... that team has bare cupboards, bad cap position and no quarterback... Its not shocking that he would want to walk away, but is surprising considering his clout in the franchise...

iirc, from what i have read, he's still under contract to coach thru 2024... so for three more years... I would imagine any team interested in his services will eventually need to cough up a first round pick... unless he hangs it up like gruden did and heads to the booth... after romo got that mega deal, sitting in front of a camera for a living can be extremely lucrative...

If he had had the balls to move on from Drew Brees - who could no longer throw - and bring in Brady he'd have 2 rings instead of one

Well 3 cause that teams repeating with Brady, Gronk, and Michael Thomas playing

So this is interesting.

This article says he agreed to a 5 year deal which runs through the 2026 season.

We just completed the 2021 season (almost) so the new 5 deal deal would have gone into effect next year....?

So did he never sign the extension and is a FA?

I do think he might want a break but no question he has cap problems and no long-term answer at QB.

Best decision is to wash his hands of it all and start new somewhere else in 2023.

If I recall correctly New Orleans was in a very bad cap situation at the time, which would have made that hypothetical - taking a cap hit by moving on from Brees while also signing Brady and trading for Gronk and his contract - impossible.
