No matter what, this was a successful season.

How about just a go-to third down someone?

Other than Hunter Henry who should not be that player, there is no one.

we get a legit #1, the defense has to rotate covereage, meaning Bourne and Meyers are going to be going against #2-#3 instead of 1 and 2

It seems like the Patriots have fallen back to reality, but no matter what happens... this season in my opinion was a success. 9+ wins and at least a glimpse of a good future. This season was always going to be a rebuild and anything more than what we have now is gravy.

I really think next season will be our true comeback season.
Totally agree! This is all gravy. I would like more gravy rather than less, but still.

With a rookie QB and the 2020 team having the least talent top to bottom since the 2000 team, the fact that the team is on the cusp of the playoffs and that rookie QB isn’t actively harming the cause, even if he’s not leading the cause like a handful of rookies have done in NFL history.

The other thing is that it’s simply hard to win in the NFL. If it was a random drawing, we would only make the Super Bowl every 16 years. If we define success as simply winning the Super Bowl, then we’re setting ourselves up for a lot of disappointment. Making the playoffs under this year‘s circumstances seems like a reasonable bar for success for this team, even if ideally we want them to win it all.
Name a year and team where the rook qb hurt in a way that actually impacted their record such that their ability to move on into the postseason was compromised…

what would our record be replacing Mac with Aaron Rodgers or cam? Do you think it would be more than a two-win differential either way?

rhamondre and Barmore (sp?) are good too.

i think we can at least say we had a good DRAFT, and were wise to spend in free agency to the extent we did (although I have doubts about some acquisitions)

This season is going pretty much as expected, on track to 11-6 after going 7-9. Add our opt outs and draft picks and free agents to the 7-9 team, yes, they perform better. So what exactly is overachieving here? They spent more money than anybody. What do we expect?

not saying we suck, but you may as well name this thread “I like Mac Jones yay”

And we say this every year. And WR is almost always a priority for posters and not for Belichick. This coming off-season is unlikely to be any dufferent.

A top WR is a priority after #1 corner (now Jackson), #1 safety (now McCourty), #2 safety (now Phillips), #2 LB (now Hightower}, and #3 LB (if Van Noy doesn't stay), and oh yeah an OL or two to replace Brown and Karras,

I guess, and if we win our last two games and make the playoffs it will be a success, but man our moment in the sun two weeks ago sure felt good, and it's tough to lose that, particularly with the D suddenly falling apart.

I’m greedy. I want a playoff win.

no, if they end up dropping their last 4, no, the season is absolutely not a success. that's a losers attitude. if we look back on the season and find that were, say, 1-5 vs playoff teams, no, the season is not a ****kcing success. if they go from #1 seed after Thanksgiving to missing the playoffs, no the season is not a success ...

The defense is why we won as many games as we did this year. Literally the exact reason. When you play better teams your D is not always going to shut them down, that is when you need an offense that can stay up, right now, this offense needs the defense to keep games really low and get turnovers, if they dont we lose. Thats not having a bad defense, that is having a low end offense. Another team gets ahead when your offense goes 3 and out or turns the ball over. The pats give up 17.3 ppg...If you cannot win with that, then your offense is the issue.
if your super duper tipsy dipsy awesome low scoring defense can't stop buffalo when given TWO chances to get the ball back to the offense in a GOTTA HAVE IT GAME...the defense is not good. they failed vs Dallas, buffalo, Tampa, new Orleans and Miami with a chance to give the offense a chance to win the ball game...the defense has been nothing more than the Boogeymen with a pass rusher who wears cool red sleeves ...let the defense show us something - like making Miami punt a few times in 2 weeks and getting a few turnovers

Agreed. Wait till after the conf championships are played to see who was good and who wasn’t.

also the afc was flat this year that’s what like 60% of the games they played so..

it’s not gonna be like that for long someone will improve in the coming years and string along consecutive playoff appearances… the bottom could fall out for the pats then boom bill retires our leaves now you’re the bengals, dolphins, etc…

The Patriots need to make the playoffs for this to be considered a successful season. That was the minimum expectation when they spent the most money they have ever paid in free agency history. I'm not a believer in 'participation' awards or 'runner up' trophies.

The Pats let a huge chance slip by, losing to the Colts and the Bills back to back. The division title race is back on. If the Pats continue to slide they could miss the playoffs/wildcard.

The good news is that the next two games are winnable and the Pats need to close out with 2 wins to give themselves a chance. I'm not worried about the Jags next week, but the Dolphins game has always been the 'achilles heel' of the Patriots and so that game is really scary. Losing that could end the season.

I still feel the Mac Jones pick was the right selection for the Pats and he has a lot of upside still in him. But he finally looked like a rookie losing to the Bills the last game. Our defense was also badly exposed. We showed no signs of ever stopping Josh Allen from getting whatever he wanted.

Bottom line, screw moral victories. This Patriots team needs to man up and win out if they want to salvage the season. Believe it or not our backs are against the wall right now, and sugar coating the reality, isn't going to make things better. Right now this team needs accountability more than anything else, from every player on this roster and the coaching staff included. Last week wasn't good enough. Do BETTER!

a chance at what?'

Surely, we have a "chance" at the playoffs with 10 wins.

We have McMillan, Jennings, McGrone and Perkins to be LBs in 2022. Need a CB and DT IMO. Don't think JC Jackson will be signed.

If Detroit cuts Trey Flowers they save $10M and eat $13M on their cap. Might happen.
